Chuck when you said "Y'all" it got me thinking of Tropic Thunder. "Y'all might be in for a treat, you know back before the war broke down I was a saucier in San Antone. Yeah I bet I could calor up some of them greens, yeah. Doin' some crawfish out in the patty Y'all Ha! I'm makin' some crab apples for dessert now, ya hear!"

Question....I know they've won in the recent past, but....

Texas is not flashy

Texas does not have great unis

Austin Texas may be in the south....but the culture in Austin couldn't be much more in-southern for a southern city

Yet texas pulls in top10 and top5 classes yearly.

Now I realize that in the recent past they have done quite a bit of winning, shit when they won that rose bowl in 05 I almost damn near became a longhorn fan!!

But my point is I think it's more about booster cash, girls, and what the top athletes are slid under the table than it is about location, weather, tradition and all the factors y'all have been arguing about.

I will say the one factor that y'all mentioned that I think it's truly important is how close to momma they are

IMO Texas is very flashy. They have a massive stadium, and their unis are widely considered some of the best and most well recognizable in college football. They pull talent we could only dream about at this point, and Austin Texas is one of the coolest most fun cities I've ever been to. Tons to do for a college kid so I'm not sure what your point is there.

Mack Brown cannot develop talent and he's had a lot of staff turnover. Plain and simple. That is what's holding them back.

I agree with Brasky. Other than Lincoln, Austin was my 2nd favorite place to watch a game.

They might have a big stadium, but big ain't flashy. Ask A&M. Their stadium is big but it's ugly as fuck

They don't play a flashy style of football like Oregon or A&M with Johnny football for that matter.

Their uniforms are well recognized and great Unis, but again, they aren't "flashy" like oregon's or other schools implementing new Unis

Austin is a great city, yes, I never denied that. I simply was countering the point that kids flock to southern schools (which they do) by pointing out that Austin is in the south, but it's nothing like a southern city...not even close. It's as liberal, and new-aged as they get in the US.

So I don't think you're disagreeing with me, I think you were just miss-understanding my points....hopefully I just explained them a little better

I think it really varies by player. Also this is just my opinion

Top Tier Talent - The 5-star and even 4-star guys
#1 priority is making the pros. So they are definitely looking for somewhere that puts players into the NFL (do you count Coaching in this category?).
#2 They also want to get on the field early or at least know they have a chance.
#3 location. They want their family and friends to be able to come watch them shine and make it to the NFL. What their parents want kinda goes in this category too, no parent really wants their kid to go to school 3000 miles away, theres virtually 0 chance for them to see them play.

I don't think apparel or TV coverage plays that big of a part. The apparel might help a school gain a kids interest but it isn't something that gets the signature. TV coverage is huge nowadays and kids realize that, so I don't think that's as much as a concern either. They know they'll get on TV if they want to be on TV. Tradition (especially recent) is important, but mostly is just going along with #1 (the path to the NFL).

Lower Tier Talent - 3 star and below
I think these kids are little more grounded. They know they might not make the NFL, but have a chance with good development.
#1 Coaches - they want the right fit. They want coaches that can mentor them, make them better, get them on the field.
#2 Tradition - want to be apart of something
#3 Location - again every kid wants their family see them play

Obviously there are outliers in every group. You are going to have top tier kids that are more concerned with Tradition or Location or even their relationship with the Coach. You are also going to have bottom tier kids that think they could make the pros even if they don't have the talent according to scouts.

If these were really #1 and #2, Iowa would be a top five school in pulling four and five star prospects. Nobody has been better in the Ferentz era at putting guys in the pros and currently there aren't a lot of elite recruits to compete with.

I agree with you that it would make sense for those to be the most important factors, but I don't think the evidence suggests that is the case.

Texas sits in a hot bed or in Texas term black gold of talent.

Texas is a name brand better than Nebraska unfortunately bc I can buy Texas gear in stores in va good luck finding a husker shirt or hat.

Texas is down south

Texas has had recent success 06 09 title run several big12 trophies

Nfl player they have put out has been more than us.

Your gonna need a different team to examine bc Texas done enough to get top talent esp when the talent is in their own backyard .

im not denying that texas is all those things

UT DOES sit in a hotbed of talent, but Austin DOES NOT give that southern city vibe that all the southern schools do.

Yeah, texas is a greatly branded school, i acknowledged that. i just said it wasnt as "flashy" (logo or uniform wise) as oregon

i mentioned that texas did have pretty recent success

i didnt mention the NFL player count, but i also didnt discredit it

i think its a great arguement because texas pulls in the talent despite going against quite a number of the arguments that people are making in this thread

What evidence. You didn't put any numbers to your claims.

Kids have fairly short memories, so just a quick internet search found me the following: Schools with most NFL draft picks since 2000; Ohio State leads | Sports

So, since 2000 here are the schools with the most draft picks:
1. Ohio State 82
2. Miami 81
3. USC 80
4. Georgia 75
5. Florida State 66
6. LSU 66
7. Gators 65
8. Tennessee 63
9. Sooners 60
10. Virginia Tech 58
Also: Badgers 57, Crimson Tide 55, Wolverines 54, Texas 52, Hawkeyes 51, Penn State 50

Wow, aside from probably Wisconsin and Iowa these are usually the schools with the highest rated recruiting classes. Note that Iowa is 15th, not #1.

Then if you change that to 1st Round picks which is kinda important to kids:
1. Miami 26
2. USC 18
3. Ohio State 17
4. Florida State 15
5. Texas 14
6. Gators 13
7. Crimson Tide 13
8. Sooners 12
9. Tennessee 12
10. LSU 12
Also: Badgers 11, Georgia 11, Penn State 10, Wolverines 9

again, does that look familiar? and Iowa isn't on it anywhere. Seems to line up pretty much exactly with what I said.

i didn't fact check the above. also note that it was only through 2012. Including 2013, IA drops quite a bit doesn't it? Didn't they only have 1 draft pick in 2013?
