Ok, last night I went to the bar expecting to only be there for about an hour because I had to work at 6am this morning. Suddenly 2.5 hours later it was 1am. I got into a long debate with a guy about today's athlete. So what means more to them,

ESPN exposure
Location of school
Apparel that the school has (Nike or Addidas)
Coaches
Tradition
Championships (national or conference) in their remembering lifetime
What their parents want

Sadly, I believe that tradition is at or towards the bottom of that list. Kids today are way to much into right here and right now an they all think they are the best thing and all Americans now. Sadly there are kids that disregard schools strictly because they are a Nike or Addidas school. It happens and it is sad.

What say you? Rank these in the order you believe kids think today. Not how you feel.

It's not an easy question because of the variables.

Notre Dame gets recruits because of tradition and the Catholic religion. There is also a difference in southern kids and northern kids. I believe race also has role in what one kid would find attractive compared to another. That being said I'll answer using the majority of CFB athletes which are black.

You can make a case for a lot of what you mention

Oregon gets its recruits bc of Nike and recent success
SEC is not about major tradition but pros and recent success
Irish is about tradition and catholic etc

Then everyone else is basically a mix of playing time, path to pros and if the coaches/scheme fits them.

But kids do not care about tradition as much as they did in the 90s it's becoming evident by how we struggle recruiting wise that how the SEC sells and scams recruits they mention the now and up to 2000. most recruits didnt watch the 90s neb run so all they see is our recent play which has been sexy enough to go out their way to come to lincoln.but location ain't an excuse if so all Cali schools would be top5.

There isn't no exact science to recruit but if you consistently win and do well on the big stage it becomes easier everyone wants to be on a winning team

Yes there are many variables. This a question where you kind of have to generalize everyone into one group. That is why I wanted them ranked in order of which is most relevant in that generalizing group.

That was my point with this guy last night. He still believes that Nebraska's "name" and "tradition" carries a huge weight with kids today and when I told him he is wrong then he talked about the parental influence where their parents understand an remember Nebraska's tradition. That was an even dumber statement to me then the first one. Yeah Nebraska's past is great but then when players look up what we have done in their remembering history all that past stuff goes out the window. He also hyped up Erstad and he is going to dominate college baseball because he can tell kids he played 13 years in the pros. So what!! He last relevant season was 04 or 05, 7 or 8 years ago when these kids were about 10 years old.

Our name doesn't hold much weight like it uses to. Kids don't care about history that why SEC schools come in flash 5-8 years of decent succes and kids are sold. If we had gotten maybe a couple of 11 win season instead of 9-4 maybe we get a couple more recruits or we can flash conference champs or bcs bowl wins

Kids these days are different now from the kids of the 90s. No one is gonna wanna wait or have to put in 2-3 of work before seeing playing time.for Nebraska to win recruiting battles they are going to have either win 11 a season or get some trophies or recruiting like mad men.

Going to a kids house showing the N and hoping they sign right there isn't gonna happen I wish

I swear about 75% of it is how they're going to be perceived.

Kids nowadays want to look pretty.........so they want to play for the prettiest program. How much cooler would it be to be able to write on your Facebook page that you play for USC rather than Nebraska?

I do not buy for 1 second that "5-stars" go play for USC just because they believe they have a better chance of getting to the NFL. They go play for USC because it is USC........and it's going to look neat when they can show all their little friends.

Yep. Look at the factors listed by jed and tell me how Wisconsin, Iowa, or Nebraska don't land in the top 25 of recruiting rankings. You simply can't without coming to the conclusion that they aren't sexy enough in the eyes of the media.

Nebraska does land in the top 25 smart.

They avg about 24.6 or since rivals began ranking FWIW. Wiscy averaged 56 or so over those same years.

We've been over all this shit a million times.

Fine, proves my point more (though Rival is notoriously bad). When you consider all the factors for the Badgers:

ESPN exposure: Five-six games on ESPN
Location of school: Located in what is considered amongst the best cities to go to college. Even if it is separated from fertile recruiting grounds in general, the state produces great lines, it is near Chicago, and is as accessible to the south as any other B1G school.
Apparel that the school has (Nike or Addidas): We've had both and haven't seen any corresponding changes in recruiting.
Coaches: Old coach was extremely popular with players, and several position coaches and coordinators were considered top flight.
Tradition: Probably about 25th. Long dry spells but several decades of very good teams.
Championships (national or conference) in their remembering lifetime: No national titles, but five conference titles since 1998.
What their parents want: Not sure how to measure this. If they care about academics and how man kids graduate, we are in the top ten among all schools.
Playing time ASAP: Two of the last five Freshmen of the Year.
Path to the pros: #2 in drafted players over the last three years...especially good on offense.

There's simply no way that you analyze all of these factors and have us outside of the top 25. Look at any of the NCAA Football games from EA which consider all of these factors. Wisconsin is always a top fifteen team. Nebraska, OSU, and Michigan never die out either. Meanwhile, the SEC teams outside of Bama, Georgia, and Florida are normally irrelevant within a few years. It would actually be pretty realistic to how this would play out if recruits actually made choices based off of the listed factors.

Didn't some retard southern recruit make his college choice recently based on the proximity of like a chik-fil-a to the school? Or some chicken place?

It's true

If you don't have flash uni Aka Oregon or other Nike schools

Not bringing In 11 + wins or trophies bcs conference etc

Or down south or west coast

Your in trouble recruiting wise.... Outside of osu/mich no one else in the big ten is flashy enough nfl draft shows it and top 25 recruiting shows it too.

Recipe for Neb. Cash in on the weak schedule the next three years and get 2/3 11 wins in those season and I guarantee we nab more top talent.

Like I said on CBS kids don't care nor remember the 90s Nebraska has to go sell itself and remind everyone who we are.

Question....I know they've won in the recent past, but....

Texas is not flashy

Texas does not have great unis

Austin Texas may be in the south....but the culture in Austin couldn't be much more in-southern for a southern city

Yet texas pulls in top10 and top5 classes yearly.

Now I realize that in the recent past they have done quite a bit of winning, shit when they won that rose bowl in 05 I almost damn near became a longhorn fan!!

But my point is I think it's more about booster cash, girls, and what the top athletes are slid under the table than it is about location, weather, tradition and all the factors y'all have been arguing about.

I will say the one factor that y'all mentioned that I think it's truly important is how close to momma they are

I was thinking that it could come down to Name. Now don't get me wrong I love my Cornhuskers but I was born and raised in Lincoln. Now you get a kid that is from the dirty dirty and it comes down to his family and friends saying would you rather be a Georgia Bulldog or a Nebraska Cornhusker. Nine times out of ten I think a 3-5 star athelete would rather have the name Bulldog over Cornhusker. 1-2 stars dont have a chance to play in the SEC so they could care less IMO.
