Well we have arrived at our first Broncos/Chiefs game of the year! Both being 7-3 and possibly the chance for 1st place in the division depending what happens with the Raiders tonight or next weekend.

Figured would start with some news for the day...

Both Aqib Talib and Derek Wolfe were practicing today.

Those attending practice said they could tell a noticeable difference in Siemian throwing the football. Looks like his shoulder is doing much better.

Andy Janovich has gotten his cast off and was looking great catching the football.

Sanders was not at practice today but was dealing with a family matter. Only player not actually practicing was Matt Paradis. He was still at practice just not doing any of the drills.

On another injury related note CJ Anderson is said to be ahead of schedule so good chance he can return if we make the playoffs.

The key to beating the Chiefs is pretty simple: don't turn the ball over. This defense thrives on turnovers, and without them, the offense struggles to score. Case in point: they only got one turnover against an average at best Bucs team yesterday, and they lost. Protect the ball, they're going to have a hard time beating you.

That said, it's not so easy to accomplish. They are adept at taking the ball away.

They really do seem to get a turnover at just the right time. Can't say much as the Broncos have done that as well over the past 2 seasons. Still I keep thinking about that Jaguars game where they were just about to score on the 1-yard line and I thought the guy got across the LOS but they ruled it a fumble and it was just too close to overturn.

So yeah I agree if we can keep from turning the ball over we stand a very good chance of winning this game. The Chiefs struggle like you said of driving the field and scoring. Right now they are 26th in the league at yards per drive (Broncos even with all their 3 and outs actually rank higher). They are also 31st in the league at Red Zone efficiency. They get held to a ton of field goals. I honestly am baffled by the lack of offense for the Chiefs. They have a decent OL, good RB's, decent QB, and even a few weapons in the passing game. Yet what we see week in and week out is a group that just can't score.

KC owned Denver last year and always plays Denver tough no matter the record. Whatever team can score a TD or 2 should win.

Not sure going 1-1 last year is owning us? Yeah they beat us pretty bad in the 2nd game but that was also the 4 interception game by Manning where he clearly should never have been playing in the game. Even with those 4 interceptions and him being pulled after a half I thought the Broncos fought back pretty well to make the game respectable at the end.

Yeah I got the Chiefs totally backwards this year, I thought the offense would be really good but the defense would struggle.

I think it really goes back to Alex Smith right now. He's just not playing good football. On the radio this morning they mentioned that last year he used his legs a lot on third downs to keep drives going, and this year he hasn't done that as much. They speculated that it could be because early in the season defenses were scheming to stop him from doing it, and now it's so far off his radar that he doesn't even think about it. And honestly those blows to the head he got a few weeks ago against Indy seem to have left him shy about running.

The other issue they have right now is Andy Reid's playcalling. In my opinion, Reid is one of the best coaches in the NFL during the week. He's great at coming up with a gameplan that can attack an opponents weakness. Howver, he's one of the worst in the NFL on gameday. His playcalling is bad, and his time management skills are notoriously awful. Here in KC there are starting to be calls for him to give up playcalling duties, but I don't think that's likely to happen.

We went 1-1 against them last year, in what world is that owning us?

Yeah i remember a few plays against us last year where they would have 3rd and long and off Smith would go. Nothing more frustrating than watching that happen. And teams really did quite a bit of that early on against us this year but it seems like we have cleaned that up a bit. Hopefully we don't see one of those back breaking type plays with Smith this week.

And I agree on Reid. Every coach has their weakness and Reid seems to struggle in games understanding the situation that his team is in. There are times I am just amazed with his play design wishing the Broncos could be that creative. Then other times that creativity has lead to some bonehead terrible plays especially in the red zone. And of course we all know his clock management skills are pretty legendary. I really do like Reid I just don't think he is the type of coach to lead a team to the Super Bowl. At some point his coaching decisions in the game cost his team big time.

I will say I am interested to see the injury report for the Chiefs this week. They were banged up heading into last week and then had a few players go down during the game. We seem to be getting healthy at the right time where the Chiefs keep losing some key players. Could be a huge difference in the game.

Denver got real lucky to win in KC last year. KC had 5 turnovers and it still took a miracle to win in KC.
When was the last time a team turned the ball over 5 times and still led by 7 with 36 seconds to go. Probably never.

We're pretty beat up right now and are in a bit of disarray on defense, but still looking forward to the game. :suds:

You can't really say the Chiefs turned the ball over 5 times and still led by 7 with 36 seconds left, because at that point they only had 4 turnovers. The 5th turnover came after the game was already tied.

You say Denver got lucky, I say they made big plays to take the ball away from the Chiefs. Regardless, at the end of the day the only thing that matters is who scored more points. The Broncos did it once, the Chiefs did it once. Neither team owned the other.

Is Peters suppose to play. He , like Talib, is a difference maker.
No idea at the moment. More concerned about Ford than anything truthfully. A creaky Hali and a rusty Houston doesn't sound extremely appealing at the moment. With Howard out too it's a hot mess.

I doubt it. I think Sanders' wife had a baby today. It isn't injury related at all.

If I remember right I saw a statistic that with Talib in the game the Broncos have only averaged giving up like 180 yards passing a game. Without him they are giving up something like 250 yards a game through the air. So yeah he has been missed for sure. Another reason why the Broncos should consider keeping him beyond this year. They are still a great pass defense without him but with him they could be considered one of the best secondary units in NFL history.

Yea signed him to a two year contract so they think he has a very high upside and hopefully his back issues behind him.

From what I remember they loved him during training camp. He climbed into that 2nd team group very quickly and brought some much needed toughness to the WR group. I would also add that one of the areas we have struggled with the most is the Red Zone so having a 6'5" WR to throw to can be a nice weapon to have.

And yeah with that type of contract I'm thinking they view him as more of a long-term investment (well really more for next season) than much this season. I think he will get his chances like I said in the Red Zone this year but looking more to next year. Our WR group really behind Sanders and DT has been a huge disappointment this season. Maybe he can develop into that 3rd option that makes this offense very hard to defend.

Not to pile on but I'll echo the thoughts of others who disagree with your statement. Splitting with a team is far from "owning" them. "Owning" a team would be a 7-1 record vs said team in a 4 year stretch. Now you can look at the two games and say this: The Broncos won a 1-score game in KC and the Chiefs won decisively in Denver. But in terms of wins and losses a 1 point win weighs as much in the W-L columns as does a 40 point loss.

The other thing is this: I fundamentally reject with extreme prejudice the notion that the Broncos "got lucky" in the KC game. The Chiefs had every reason to win that game: Home opener after a road win to start the season, home game on a short week (TNF), emotionally charged atmosphere with Berry returning and these other factors at play, nemesis rival who's bitch-slapped you around for the past few seasons, Broncos making their first road start of the season and of Kubiak's coaching tenure in Denver (never know how a team will respond in that scenario) as well as the new system being a bad fit for Manning's skill set. Combine all that with a 14 point lead and the Chiefs should have run away with that game. But the Broncos responded, including deliberately scouting Jamaal Charles and honing in on his style of carrying the ball when he runs as a potential to create a turnover. And they executed, too. That's not luck. It's also not luck that the Broncos won that game the way they did.

With the score 24-17 the Chiefs had no answer for the Broncos offense. The Broncos scored and tied the game with a drive that started (if I'm not mistaken) with just 2:21 remaining. Then the Chiefs attempted to play for the win instead of taking a knee for OT and that did them in. That's not luck, that's execution.

Again, I don't mean to pile it on, I just don't do that "luck" narrative. You can shoot that with a 12 gauge and then tie it to a cinder block and drop it into a gator-infested swamp.
