So wait, we lost Paulson AND Paul for the season tonight??
Time to get my Cooley Jersey out of the frame.
Several articles from the recent past have been quoted as saying that Cooley is ineligible to play for the Redskins this season since he is employed by them as a broadcaster - having a hard time finding that info now (save for a vague reference from Pro Football Talk).
Even if somehow he is eligible they need to pass on this option. Cooley hasn't had a true NFL season in 5 years & is at the age where his skills are suspect. This team has its first true challenge of the season, and it will be telling to see how they react. They need to stick to their overall philosophy by looking from within or finding younger, cheaper guys on the waiver wire in the weeks ahead.
What they don't need to do is to revert to old ways and panic. No need for bad trades, gimmick players or any other moves that are simply done for the short term. Other situations like this will occur during the season so this is a good test. Nobody said that this season will be perfect, and injuries are a reality for every team in the NFL (which is the reason why predictions made prior to the season are kind of stupid).
While in over all theory I tend to agree with you. Reality is, if healthy Cooley now would serve the team better than a guy we pick up in three weeks off the waiver wire. Is he going to be the player from six year ago?? not a chance. If he could be signed, would he likely serve the team better than an undrafted free agent?? likely so. And some times you do have to make moves for the short term to facilitate the long term. Going into the season with an oft injured Reed who still isnt even remotely healthy, and two undrafted rookies or some one we pick up a week before the season starts might not be the best course of action considering we have two also very inexperienced players on the right side of the line.
Again - he may not even be eligible to play for the Redskins. Beyond that they should wait & see who gets dropped by other teams over the next few weeks. It doesn't have to be some undrafted FA. It could be someone who actually is halfway decent. Lots of somewhat familiar names are going to get cut soon.
What I don't want to see are moves like the Jason Taylor trade a while back. I hate to see this team step back based on panic related moves & certainly don't want to see anything involving trading picks (which I doubt happens w/SM). As for Cooley - if he is eligible - I have my doubts. That clip of him sprinting yesterday was less than impressive. I really can't imagine a player like him - good but never great & showing signs of wear years ago - making an impressive comeback. It sounds like some folks are thinking more w/ their hearts than their minds on this one.
I have no doubt that SM will make the right decision in this tough situation.
