A sparsely attended homecoming concert featuring a band popular when current freshmen were toddlers,

And now I feel that much older.

Why would a school drop football?

With the cost of having a CFB program about to grow even more the teams with poor fan support and interest like the Pitts and Miamis of the world are going to struggle. It's all over but the cryin for programs like Pitt. They are done IMO, just a matter of time.

That article is both sad and pathetic (for what few Pitt fans remain) and fall down, laugh out loud hilarious for non-Pitt fans. :pound:

My favorite portion follows:

3:55 PM: Pitt has nearly gone 10 real-time minutes without turning the ball over. On the first play, predictably, Pitt fumbles. They do not recover, because the universe revels in absurdity. Concerned questions about personal safety flood your phone. Georgia Tech scores in three plays. It is 28-0. People are actually getting up to leave, and they are passing by the people who are late coming in. You sink into your seat. Outstanding ineptitude, thy name is Pitt. There’s just under 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

The fact that Pitt "FANS" are leaving the Homecoming game while people are still arriving to the game is a sad comentary on the state of Pitt football. While I consider(ed) Pitt our #1 rival for most of my life - I feel a kind of sadness at how far they fallen and how this must be impacting their most ardent of fans.

NAW!!! Just kiddin'! I loved that article and I have forwarded the linked to many, many friends. Some of whom are Pitt alum. :suds:

I think the status of Pitt football was known when they had $1 tickets for the UConn game a few years back. What is their average attendance for the year?

I found this link:

College football attendance down 1 percent in 2014 - CBSSports.com

Basically, PITT's average thru 5 games this season is 43,168 and represents a 16% decrease from last year. I am not sure how they count attendance (tickets sold vs. butts in the seats?). I have seen portions of 2 games from PITT (VT, GT) and the stands were sparsely populated.

WVU is at 59,161 which is +4% from last season.

As a side note: Pitt tied an FBS record with their 5 fumbles in the first quarter against GT.

Good thing they factor in season ticket holders whether they show up or not, because Heinz Field seats 65,000 and by that shot of the GT game no way they had more than 15K and Akron certainly didn't sell out...

It's funny about PITT I think they live in the past...that they have this delusional thought process that we need them on our schedule more than they need us...that it's a better program...I didn't think weed was legal in Pennsylvania yet?

Just did the math...that conference has shunned Wv entrance for a long time and will never let them in...they really are OKAY with at least 9 of there teams averaging less than 50,000 per game and 2 under 30,000...wow!

I don't believe that. By the pictures on the article and prior games, Heinz Field cannot be more than 1/2 full. Unless all that yellow are people wearing Pitt Sweats. Maybe when counting, they thought that the empty seats were actually the fans. 43,000 empty seats sound about right.

How could we compete in the education arena? Especially with the higher level classes they have at UNC? They should have said it sas a cyber class. I mean....was part of the reason why we didn't fit in was becUse of our educational standards? Poetic justice.

Agreed. Heinz only seats 50k. There is no way in hell they only have 7k empty seats...

Miami has a lousy fan base but great alumni support that will keep them going, but there will be severe segregation by schools that put other things first besides football once playing players become legal

agree, its going to get harder and harder to keep up, especially when the support is not there. My guess is the non revenues go first then some tough decisions will have to be made as far as football and the feasibility.
