NFL set to impose 15-yard penalty for use of racial slurs on the field - NFL - Sporting News

The NFL has discussed implementing a 15-yard penalty for players who use racial slurs on the field, CBSSports.com first reported on Friday.

Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome confirmed in his Combine press conference on Saturday that it's something that will come up and could go into effect during the league owners meetings in Florida next month.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance, the watchdog group for diversity in the NFL, has pushed for this with both Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league's competition committee. In addition, if a player directed the N-word or similar derogatory term at another player a second time, he would be ejected from a game.

I think this has more to do with it coming across on TV broadcasts than anything else.

Could be true. I just can't wait to see the first black player ejected for use of the n-word. That will go over real well.

I don't like stuff like this being regulated on the field. I don't condone racial slurs but the league has tape of virtually everything including sound from "miked up" players. They can fine players or even suspend them for a game or whatever. In-game penalties are not the answer. They already call too many "personal fouls" anyway.

I'm tempted to agree. I would extend it to any audible cursing to avoid issues that have already been mentioned in this thread (eg flagging people for the n-word but not for "faggot", etc).

As has been said, I think it's being done to appease the TV networks. It's all very well to say it's politically correct, but the networks would rather be politically correct than have the FCC fine them $500k because they happened to broadcast a football player saying the n-word.

networks are sensitive I get it but the FCC has not put the N word on the ban list yet

key word is yet

Then how about Honkey, Cracker, etc ????? Let's see if they recognize those words as racial slurs !!!!!
It's gotten totally out of hand now with all the sensitivity in as violent a sport as pro football.....
Ridiculous.......:gaah:

I just watched "The Butler" last night. It was used there. Was not an issue - in context.

It would have lessened the message if removed.

Is it's use on the field acceptable? I'm not of the mind to tell blacks what to say to each other.
I'm white and have used the word with friends - under VERY careful circumstances. Don't recommend it. Most whites can't carry it off.....
