This guy is easily our best defensive lineman, and IMO probably top 3 most important pieces of our defense, yet we're fining him for being overweight? Yes, he's a house of a man, but isn't that exactly what you want in your run clogging, powerhouse NT?

Broncos Player Reportedly Fined $300,000 For Being Overweight, Could Leave Team - Yahoo Finance

I don't know how much validity there is to this, but could shit be any more bizarre and just all over the place 4 days after our season ended? :twitch:

I can't even say that DT should be a higher priority to be resigned. Yes, I really, REALLY want DT back in a Broncos uni, but Knighton is the beast, Mack Daddy nose tackle we hadn't had for the previous 10 years before he got here.

Don't wanna hear about the Suh rumors, or whatever I read the other day either. I would not want that guy over Knighton.

I don't know, Doc. Good as Knighton is capable of playing, I can also understand that the team wants him to stay in shape. Hard for me to feel too sorry for any of our players at the moment, including Potroast!

I gotcha, and yah....dude should shed a few pounds, and easily could with some discipline. However, to fine him $300K, and now there is talk he possibly won't be back? I say just collect the money, and then get to the bargaining table and get working on a new deal. Let him be fat......dude was a beast for us this year.

I don't know, but I think you may be overrating just how good Knighton was this year. He finished with his second worst tackle totals for a 16 game season in his career. He also finished with his lowest solo tackle total for a full 16 game season in his career. I don't remember him being as good as he was in 2013. Not even really close, to be honest. Many times I felt like people talked about him because of the nickname and remembering how he terrorized Brady in the AFC Championship Game. Like Knighton said, they probably don't want him back.

Also, the article is clear that the $300k was over the course of the last two seasons.

Then it will probably be very frustrating to you when the Broncos emerge in 2015 still a respectable team and at a minimum a playoff contender. :suds:

If you are going to troll make sure you are not supporting a team that mortgaged their future for a gimpy diva at the whim of the richest idiot.

Question, will the Redskins ever have success again or are they going the way of the Browns and raiders?

Teams want their players to be "bigger" (muscle wise) and faster. If he was considered "too fat" and his production slipped I don't see why a team couldn't fine someone. Granted if it's not in his contract then the Broncos could be in some serious trouble.

I am almost positive it is in his contract. He has a history of not staying in shape and this was an incentive. This type of stuff is nothing new either. Coughlin fines his players something like $400 per pound per day over.

Sticking to Knighton. I like the guy and would not mind keeping him around. He does tip the scales officially at 335 and many have him pegged way above that. If he is coming in at 350+, a lot of it fat, that can be a big issue.

Unfortunately, I think he will follow Del Rio to Oakland and we will have to see him in black and silver.

It was in his contract so legal trouble for the Broncos. I don't really feel sorry for Knighton in the sense he has his contract and knows what the expectations are. Both years here in Denver he has come in out of shape to camp. His first year the coaches actually were about to cut him because he was so out of shape. Throw in then for this season he was voted a captain yet his example to the rest of the team was to show up out of shape. Not quite what you want your captain setting the example for the rest of the guys.

Now for me if Knighton can get himself into shape then yes I would love to see him back on the team. This past season though he could barely stay on the field for 50% of the snaps. In fact Malik Jackson a back up played more snaps for the season than him. Another reason I actually am one that would not mind us signing Suh if say Austin does become our coach is he plays something like 85% of their snaps on defense.

I do think Knighton could be going to Oakland. So far he has proven that he fits really well in a Del Rio type scheme but has failed in others. Heck he got benched while in Jacksonville and like I said barely made the cut in Denver for a little while.

Exactly! And I suspect this could be one BIG reason why we failed to get the inside push against the Colts less than stellar O-Line.

Ok, after reading a bit more it seems like Knighton is somewhat disheartened by the departure of Del Rio. I kinda forgot his revival in Denver was because Del Rio brought him in. I'd still like to think he'd stay in Denver, but if he's not 100% invested in whoever the new DC becomes, then perhaps him leaving wouldn't be the end of the world.

While I understand his stats may not have been all that great, he was a disruptive force for us in the middle all year, and countless times changed the outcome of a play whether he directly made the tackle, sack or not.

Except possibly when we needed this the most (like last week).

I would say Knighton was a bit up and down for the year. His issue was 2-fold in my book. The first being that he just couldn't stay on the field as much as we needed him to. He was in for 5% less snaps this season than the year before. That ends up being around 50 snaps or an entire game less of snaps because of being out of shape. The second being you have to wonder a little because of him being out of shape what kind of quality we were getting in those snaps as there were times especially in the Colts game where he just got blown backwards. I've seen him many times take on a double team and push them straight back and that just wasn't the case this season. So I would say his play was inconsistent this year. When he was on yes he dominated and looked like a top-5 DT in the league. When he wasn't though he was getting blown off the line.

Again I wouldn't mind him being back one bit. He is a great run stuffing DT and a great personality in the lockerroom. If we are going to invest in him though I would love to see the team put some very strict dietary clauses in the contract. I would explain to him that if he is going to continue to be the captain of this team then we need to see him more invested especially in the off season to show the young guys what it takes to get to that next level. The off season honestly is where a lot of the season is won in my opinion. You show up to camp out of shape then it takes you have the season just to get caught up to the other guys.

I am sure it was one reason but to me (outsiders opinion) it appeared that the entire Broncos team seemed disheartened or "we should have no problem with the Colts" attitude and it cost them big time.

I disagree. I thought the team came out fired up, to be honest. The defense opened with a great series. The offense played pretty well outside of needing the roughing the passer to convert the 3rd down. Denver stopped the Colts on their second possession as well. Then the Colts made adjustments and Denver did not.

I think that had some to do with it redseat and us Bronco fans have seen that to much in important games, etc. I believe that`s where the coaching failed. If you can`t get your guys to get motivated and pumped up for crucial games and "respect" your opponnent, then something is def wrong there. Not giving the players a pass by any means but you see on other teams, with even less on the line, they play hard and inspired football for their coaches and team mates. Something has been very transparent under Fox,Rio and company these last few yrs, and that is uninspired play when situations dictate otherwise. Mind boggling really. Love to see Kubiack but also am really hoping for a DC and staff that will mesh with the head coach and get these guys to play on a different level consistantly.
