I would personally hate to see KCP leave, but he will likely get a better offer - and based on the past indications - players almost always take the better offer.

I’ll always be grateful that he was a starter on our only championship team. But if rumors are true that he’s been offered $50 MM over two years, I wouldn’t want to sign him for that even if we had the cap space. Plus, he’s won two rings, totally understandable for him to set up his family for several generations.

We were kind of in a bind when Reggie picked up his own 5 mil option considering we didn’t want to pay him but had no choice.

Payton then nonchalantly says he had talked on the phone with Sutton a few times recently. Payton - at the press conference - acts like he still doesn't know if Sutton is coming to the mandatory practice. Whatever Payton told Sutton worked because - Sutton comes in talking about the Broncos like they are contenders in his mind. I think it shows he really wants Sutton on this team. I think Sutton gets accommodated with attainable bonuses or given a couple more years and some bonus money to the current contract.

It is bold for Payton to get involved because - Payton will likely get sued if Sutton later thinks he got lied to. It isn't the kind of thing a lawyer would let him do if Payton wanted prior approval. It is though - a message to the players that Payton is a for "real" guy.
