From a hockey standpoint this bugs me because Phaneuf stepped up to make a hit that didn't need to be made and put himself out of position resulting in a decent scoring chance for the other team. Brains were never Phaneuf's strong point though.

Fans better get used to this. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of headshot penalties called the first half of the season. The players will adapt, but the learning curve will be slow I think.

That's the kind of play that drove Flames fans crazy, Dion stepping up to make a big hit, but also giving up a great scoring chance to the opposition. It's also how he got the nickname 210 (in the league 2 years, but has the hubris and attitude of a 10 year vet, i.e. you can't tell him anything).

As for the hit itself, not needed and in my opinion "on the edge", glad to see the ref call a penalty on the play.

I felt like Phaneuf would have had to get on his knees in order to make a "clean" hit here. The guy was facing the wrong direction and admired his pass. He was fair game for a hit.

I mean yea, not needed in pre-season but suspended these hits will be pussifying the league IMO.
