Who is the official back up to Perry Riley? Jason Hatcher? Scherff? Garçon? None of those backups have officially been announced.....is that problematic? He does not have to release a depth chart until the morning of the game. Why not try and treat this position like every other position on the team?
Sty, I think you are reading too much into it. My guess is it's grudens attempt to try and bring some normalcy and control back to these things. Colt is going to be the #2 for this game at least and my bet for the foreseeable future. If I am wrong (which happens) then there are some hi jinx in the works and Danny is back calling the shots over our new GM and HC.

Because the QB position is different than the ILB position, especially for a team that has been moving their QBs all over the depth chart for a year. I agree with Sty, why was an injured and totally ineffective Griffin put ahead of Colt who has played very well? And again why on Earth would they expose Griffin to injury?

They haven't (yet). Colt is listed as #2 on the depth chart released earlier in the week. And on what other team is the #2 QB announced before any other #2 at other positions. But I do agree that if Griffin is named the #2, then there are other forces at work. It makes no sense for the reason you point out..

Maybe I am reading too much into it, but since the NFL decided years ago to make the QB position the preeminent one, much of the focus has gone to that position. I just think that it is the easiest thing to do when publicly outlining who starts and who backs him up, especially if the third guy has not been cleared to go. The statement Gruden makes that confuses me is he'll make that decision once Griffin is cleared. What decision? Everyone seems to think that it would be downright crazy to play Griffin under any circumstance, well almost everyone.
BTW: how rare is it that only in special circumstances do we ever hear who starts, let alone who backups at any other spot?

The difference is that Andrews is an employee of snyder. The Redskins can have no contact with the independent doctor. All communication goes through the league.
But if this guy has quit is post but still working the RG case wouldn't that essentially make him an employee of the Skins at this point? Not trying to be a smart ass. Respectfully asking.

Grudens statement is a bit confusing, I'll give you that. I again think it may just be his way of trying to normalize the whole situation and treat the QB position as any other. Unfortunately his statement may only draw more scrutiny to the issue.

Interesting thread. Got a question...

When teams carry three QB's. Isn't it standard practice to dress all three having one listed as the emergency QB that can only enter the game if the other two get injured? Wouldn't all three be in uni on game day if healthy?

I don't think so. He has resigned, but has not left yet. He still is employed by the League. That's the way I understand it. These guys are basically consultants and work on cases as they arise. He owns the rg3 case and is responsible for seeing it to its end.

Unsually the 3rd QB is inactive on game day and doesn't dress. The only time 3 QBs are active is if there is an injury situation that makes it probable that the starter might not make it through the entire game. Last year, I can't recall a single game where we dressed 3 QBs.

perhaps you're right. Just thought there was a game day roster exemption for 3rd QB. Dallas can't cause they only have two on their 53 man roster.

NFL drops third quarterback rule, 46 active players on game day

Excerpt

The owners and players have agreed to expand game day rosters from 45 to 46 active players. The No. 3 quarterback will no longer be an “emergency” inactive player.

In other words, a team can insert its third-string quarterback for a short period at any point in the game, then take him out and put the starter back in. Previously, the first and second quarterbacks couldn’t re-enter the game if the No. 3 quarterback played before the fourth quarter.

Glad that's over. Now let's rally behind Kirk and make the national reporters eat some crow.
