From the Buffalo News..

Buffalo Sabres owner Tom Golisano never has placed a "For Sale" sign on his franchise but for years the billionaire has listened to prospective investors with the idea he would eventually sell the team. This time, it appears he actually has a buyer with the money and local interest to complete a deal.

Terrence Pegula, who made his fortune in the natural gas and oil industry in Pennsylvania, has emerged as a serious candidate to purchase the Sabres. His wife is from Western New York and he's an avid Sabres fan and former hockey dad who donated $88 million to Penn State for a new arena and Division I hockey program.

The tenure of Tom Golisano as owner of the Buffalo Sabres could be coming to a close.

Ken Campbell of The Hockey News is reporting that billionaire Terry Pegula has signed a letter of intent to purchase the Sabres from Golisano for $150 million dollars.

I think we may have an owner that gives a shit. He has twice the money that Galisano has and loves hockey!!

You guys arent that far out of the race... Rough start, but you can still turn the season around. Your not gonna bypass the B's and the Habs though. You'll duke it out with Ottawa for third in the division, while B's and Habs will battle for the division ;)

I hope so, now that The Miller is healthy that should help.

No offense Boss, but I think Golisano gets short changed by the fans in Buffalo pretty bad.

Granted, once he had the team, he sat on it a bit and didn't make good decisions, but let's not forget that Darcy has been f-ing things up for years now, even before the new ownership came in.

And let's also consider that - without Golisano - who knows where the Sabres are playing these days. Most likely not in Buffalo.

In terms of new ownership making a difference: I'll believe it when I see it.

And unless his first move is to fire Darcy, I won't be believing much.

Galisono never had his heart in the team and was just concerned with making money. By his own admission he was never a true hockey fan and was more interested in politics and his track record shows that.

I am happy that we have a potential new owner that cares about the game and the fans.

Galisono had his interest in making money and having sold out games I don't think there is a debate there. This guy cares about the game and has the money to put a winning team on the ice without self imposed cap to just make make money so in all due respect I disagree with you.

As far as Darcy he was TOLD to do what he had to do because of the financial constraints. I feel they will be better with this new owner.

Fair enough points.

I don't debate that Golisano was interested in money and politics as his number one objective - I remember the fact that he was running for governor around the same time and hoped to garner a lot of WNY votes.

And they have had a self-imposed cap for a few years, but in 2006-2007 the team spent right to the cap, went all in for one year, and came up short. Management blew the follow-up so famously, but I don't think Golisano gets 100% of the blame for that.

Absolutely he deserves some of it, but Darcy's horrible policy of not negotiating new contracts during the season had been in effect for years before the Golisano era and came back to bite them yet again.

We can respectfully disagree about the problem though. All I'm saying is that I don't think Golisano is the only problem.

I should add that I'm in favor of new ownership, I'm just very cynical about whether it will actually make that big of a difference.

Burned too many times I guess :L

And here I thought I would get punched in the nuts when I clicked on this thread.

Hope and Sabres just don't seem to belong in the same sentence.

Like my son said in an e-mail to me...

Yeah I heard this on the radio today. It would be nice to have a hockey guy at the very top, maybe willing to spend right to the cap. Golisano got the franchise financially stable, now it’s time for a hockey enthusiast to get into the mix. If he donated $88 million to Penn State to get their hockey program going then I can only imagine he’ll throw the money at the Sabres.
