The Washington Post reports Redskins president Bruce Allen has put GM Scot McCloughan on notice, and wants him "completely locked in on talent evaluation."

Specifically, reporter Mike Jones says Allen is "breathing down" McCloughan's neck after his shaky 2016. McCloughan won't be allowed to meet with reporters at the Combine. McCloughan has provided much-needed stability, but been hit or miss in the player acquisition department. He hasn't quite lived up to the reputation he established in San Francisco and Seattle. Be that as it may, the last thing the Redskins need is another shakeup.

The talent upgrade was missing last year, however some of this stuff Mike Jones is saying seems like a stretch.
The GM doesn't really need to meet with reporters anyway, they can get all the info they need from Gruden.
Scott did suck last year, but maaan they acting like Danny got him on a short leash hahahaha

One thing this organization needs is consistency. Hiring and firing everyone every few years will not work and has hindered this organization long enough.

That being said, SM did a bad job last year in the draft and in FA. Completely neglecting the DLine was unacceptable. I don't think his job is on the line but he needs to use the available cap space wisely and draft better. My fear is that he actually thought our defense was better than it really was last year. There are several mid-level free agents who would be upgrades here. Its his job to find and sign these players. The DLine, Safety corps. and LB units need to be cleansed.

If that's truly the case. Damn firing him, someone might need to commit him. As he maybe of suffered some type of break from reality. Seriously though, it was pretty apparent he wanted Norman and thought highly of his play/skillset. Other than that though, not a single thing was done to try and improve the defense imo. Hell, while I'm not saying what he did was all luck, I seriously doubt any Skins coach thought they could get what they got from Murphy last year. He was at the a pleasant surpirse.

The only thing BA is putting on notice is, "were winning off the field".

We got cap space, real cap space. If any one doesnt think that winning off the field comes directly from Danny.... you havent been paying attention. This is all lining up for the Skins to be very active and overly aggressive in Free agency much like days of old.

We can only hope that if we are going to over spend, its on guys like High Tower who have a name, but are still young and might be relatively hungry despite getting paid.

Hell - I would think that just about every GM and head coach in the NFL would love to never talk to the media. To me that seems like more of a reward than a punishment.

My point was, BA is just a figure head, cap numbers guy. He surely isn't making any player personnel decisions since that is Scotty Mac's job. There is no credence to the assumption that BA asked SM not to talk with anyone and really, what is BA's job in Washington other than hiring old buddies? Does anyone really know?

Have to disagree. Bruce has a defined job. The GM and Coach report to him, he reports to Snyder. I think there is some validity to Allen pulling rank and not allowing the GM to talk to the media. But we can only speculate as to the why behind this. But the assumption that Bruce is simply a figure head is a bit flawed.

i think this is a typical overreaction by the WP . bruce is in charge SM works for him . we can only do so much in one off season . we are heading on the right track

we need to give SM the full amount of time to get this to where we want to go .

how can we seriously want to get rid of SM after we have had our 1st back to back winning seasons since the late 90's ? i have posted the players (young ones ) he has acquired and so far its been pretty good .

I tend to agree. Its the slow season and Jones needs something to write about that will garner hits. I'm sure this article, while all speculation, did just that.

Here we go again. It appears that the WP is trying to fuel the fire about possibly replacing the GM in the next year or so. This rt after they fueled the fire about possibly getting rid of Cousins somehow. No doubt they will advocate getting rid of Gruden if things don't work out well.

What don't they get? In the past they constantly bitched about this team having no continuity & now they are advocating constant change. Complete BS on their part, and they have a knack for taking rumors and minor comments and blowing them up in a major way.

Like Skinsdad said - they are coming off back-to-back winning seasons & heading in the rt direction. They also finally have a decent QB for more than one season & all of their draft picks. No need for change for a while. People need to stop thinking in the old Snyderesque manner.

Steinbergs reasons for not letting Scot speak are hilarious...

1) The team is worried that this high-ranking executive would be unable to pronounce and/or remember his franchise quarterback’s first name, and a high-ranking team executive repeatedly botching his franchise quarterback’s first name in public media appearances would not be a good look.

2) The team is worried that if McCloughan spends 15 minutes chatting with the media, he might overlook a potentially crippling injury to a potential first-round draft pick that might cost this potential first-round draft pick his entire rookie season.

3) There is only one man in the organization who is qualified to speak on its most important developments — like, for example, its Harvest Fest.

4) There is a crippling concern that, if he speaks, the GM might be later spoofed by a woman on “Saturday Night Live.”

5) I mean, how many times do we all need to hear about “football players,” anyhow?

6) Actually, everyone is perfectly fine with McCloughan addressing the media; he just has to wear gold pants while he does it.

7) The Redskins have always believed that GMs are better served the less often they speak. Except for that time the Redskins gave their GM a radio show.

8) Look, this isn’t just about the first few weeks of 2017. McCloughan will never again address the local media. It’s that simple. NEVER — you can use caps.

9) It’s possible the GM could say something silly in a news conference that would give way to two years of jokes and radio bits. Something that demoralizes fans and encourages cynicism. Something like “winning off the field.” Something like that.

10) Too much In Scot We Trust, and not enough In Bruce We Trust.
