I agree that this was one of the weaker episodes of the show to date, but it was a good character episode, and the show needs episodes like this to make us care more when big events happen.
This was not about "how he learned to use a stick". This was about how he returned to humanity. This explains why, even during the Wolf-attack, he refuses to kill people. This will lead to Morgan's inner struggle with making his personal philosophy work in the post-ZA world.
I am not sure it needed to be 90 mins, though. I think the emotions they were after could have been achieved in a regular episode.
