I think a lot of it also has to do with the fact that we have cameras at all angles on every square inch of the ice. We see everything now. I'll bet a lot of dirty crap simply went unnoticed a long time ago.
Perhaps there is a reduction of respect in the game now, but we also have to take into account that we see pretty much every little dirty move every player pulls out there in today's media-centric society, and I don't think we can simply overlook that fact when comparing the eras.
