This and 0-0 tie is pretty interesting. Don't take this the wrong way but this rivalry fact kind of catches me off guard but it is probably because they were both pretty bad for so long that rivalry didn't get much notice outside its own fan base. Before you say anything they have both become very competitive and expectations have changed drastically!

Was the 0-0 tie before overtime or did they play the maximum number of OT's at the time and no one ever scored?

I did not know they claimed that many. I guess their fans are quieter than us Bammers? lol I bet some of those are by a very respected UPI poll (AP and UPI were considered top polls at the time) that crowned their champion before the bowl games, saying the bowl game was for fun and not as representative as the regular season. We have now come to laugh at that as we have the AP poll then the Bowl Alliance then the BCS and probably the "only" 4 team CFB playoff... eventually.

And yet, Alabama still claims a national championship in 1973.

Coaches poll selection was a viable selector back then. Not hard to see why its claimed, though most Bama fans i know dont claim that one. The ones that do claim it due to the "66 title that we got robbed of.
