On August 9, 1988, in a move that heralded significant change in the NHL, the Oilers traded Wayne Gretzky, along with McSorley and Krushelnyski, to the Kings for Carson, Martin Gelinas, $15 million in cash, and the Kings' first-round draft picks in 1989 (later traded to the New Jersey Devils – New Jersey selected Jason Miller), 1991 (Martin Rucinsky), and 1993 (Nick Stajduhar).

Wayne Gretzky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

not sure if this part is true if so... WTF???? wonder what Vancouver would have offered

Two hours after the Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1988, Gretzky learned from his father that the Oilers were planning to deal him to another team.[65] Walter had known for months, but kept it from Gretzky so as to not upset him. According to Walter, Gretzky was being "shopped" to Los Angeles, Detroit, New York and Vancouver.

they were talking about it on the radio this morn ... didnt realize that the feds in Ottawa wanted to bring forward legislation that would prevent Pocklington from trading Gretzky ??? lol

The Oilers completely blew that trade. They should have demanded Luc Robitaille. Carson couldn't wait to get out of Edmonton. Yes, I know Carson was coming off a great year & was considered the better player at the time.

It wasn't a trade as much as a sale (I mean, the 15 million was the key to the deal for Peter Puck).

just came across this on wikipedia about Skalbania and Pocklington ... comical business transaction

Skalbania purchased the Edmonton Oilers of the WHA from Charles Allard in 1975. With debts in the range of $1.6 million during the next season, he took on Peter Pocklington as a partner. Pocklington gave Skalbania a vintage Rolls Royce Phaeton used in the film The Great Gatsby, a painting by Maurice Utrillo and a diamond ring worth about $150,000 that happened to be on his wife's finger. The swap was worth about $700,000, according to Pocklington, who also agreed to take on half of the team's debt.

I can see why we couldn't make a tempting offer offer.
Adams and Tanti were the only assets worth a damn.
1987-88 Vancouver Canucks [NHL] roster and player statistics at hockeydb.com

from James Mirtle

Brian Burke's on @TSN1050Drive right now talking about how the Canucks were in talks to acquire Gretzky 23 years ago.

Burke said the Oilers wanted three first-round picks, $18-million, Greg Adams and another player for just Gretzky.

@mirtle Good thing they kept the picks: Jason Herter, Petr Nedved, and Alek Stojanov. *thumbs up*

/apparently the cash amount was the stumbling block for the canucks

we were in pretty rough shape financially at the time I recall. or maybe thereafter. its not like Gretzky would have done anything after that his big seasons were clearly behind him. I mean really what did he do for a struggling franchise like LA anyway. meh... we missed out on nothing

1988-1989 GP 78 G 54 A 114 PTS 168
1989-1990 GP 73 G 40 A 102 PTS 142
1990-1991 GP 78 G 41 A 122 PTS 163
1991-1992 GP 74 G 31 A 90 PTS 121
1992-1993 GP 45 G 16 A 49 PTS 65
1993-1994 GP 81 G 38 A 92 PTS 130
1994-1995 GP 48 G 11 A 37 PTS 48
1995-1996 GP 62 G 15 A 66 PTS 81

TOTAL - 539 GP - 246G - 671A - 917PTS

He clearly wouldnt have been worth that $18M eh Brian....... that wouldnt have been paid back at all with tickets, playoff success (maybe 2 cups in that time with him)

frak me

In all fairness, $18 million back then was worth like $400 bajillion now. Back when hamburgers cost a dime, Model Ts were the newest thing, and every team wore some combination of black, white, and gray because they hadn't invented color yet.

Frank Griffiths bought the Canucks for $9 million (in 1974).
The expansion fee in 1970 was $6 million, but no one local was willing to step up for that much. So an American owner (Tom Scallen) stepped in, but was later put in prison for stealing $3 million out of the team's treasury... that's when Griffiths stepped in, more out of civic duty than anything.

Griffiths family had to sell when it became a game for billionaires instead of millionaires (and they blew their wad bringing the Grizzlies to town and building GM Place).

I miss the days of 5.00 student rush tickets.
Before Wayne you could show up at the Great Western Forum just before a game and get 5.00 tickets. After the first period you could move to any open seat.

Are you a Penguins fan?

Mr. Jeff Sly,

We all know the Pens and Caps fans started watching the year Crosby and Ovechkin entered the league. The Flyer fans never stop because they love the punishment. See Cleveland Browns-->

Sincerely,

The Swamp

I was going to make a joke about how it turns us on to see our team fail :whip:, but then jokes about Hartnell removing clothes while chasing a breakaway led into Lappy getting nailed in the face and downright disturbing thoughts of the implications of Leighton taking it in the five hole and it just got uncomfortable.
