Gamblers general lose more than they win, and some lose a lot. Now image a player losing a bundle gambling than being offer a bribe to do something like say fumbling the ball away. Maybe that's why the NFL would prefer players not to gamble.

The NFL has always taking the strongest stance on players gambling. When Romo was playing he was told if he held/hosted a poker tournament in a casino he, (and any player playing), would be suspended. That's without any sports betting or team facilities being involved. Apparently the NFL has made the rules clear to teams and teams have made the rules clear to players in team meetings. I don't like the rules but the NFL is entitled to set them and enforce them. It's easy enough to have a family member act on your behalf. "Say John, I think 1500 people would like the Giants plus 3 and half today. 2000 fans would like the Dolphins straight up". I'd rather players stayed clearly within the rules. Failing that at least be a bit smart.

I might be cynical but it looks to me like the NFL has bent over backwards to avoid catching big name players whilst they're using the expendable players to send a message.

At least it's not snooker where top players can bet on themselves to lose.
