The Season So Far-week –Week 13
1st 4: LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia
2nd 4: Utah, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida
3rd 4: Michigan, Baylor, Minnesota, Penn State
Analysis: Oregon and Penn State dropped out of playoff contention this week, with most of the other top contenders remaining in contention. Georgia got a break with Oregon’s loss, and could remain in the top 4 even if they lose the SEC Championship. Alabama is not yet out of it. It’s game with Auburn will decide a lot this week. Oklahoma continues to struggle, and they must look more decisive in their last 2 games.
My Picks for the Playoff: LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia.
Analysis: No one has won anything yet, but Clemson has the easiest path. LSU likely could survive a loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship, and they both would make the playoffs. Ohio State faces two tough games, Michigan and Wisconsin/Minnesota. SOS could pole vault them over LSU for the number one spot. Utah has look surprisingly good of late, and could sneak into the playoffs if LSU decisively beats Georgia.
Most surprising: Utah, Minnesota, Baylor.
Analysis: Utah is currently ranked number 5 in my poll and must beat Oregon or there will be no PAC 12 team in the playoffs. Minnesota is in the same boat with a matchup with Wisconsin for the Big 10 West and a chance to play Ohio State. 2 wins are a must. Baylor has looked good all year long and a re-match with Oklahoma in the Big 12 CG could be the ticket to the playoffs.
Most disappointing: Arkansas, Texas, Northwestern, UCLA
Analysis: Arkansas continues to be totally non-competitive in the SEC. Texas was expected to be a top 10 team and now has 5 losses. Northwestern suffered a big drop from the Big 10 West title from last year. UCLA has been up and down this year, having just lost to arch rival USC in their biggest game of the year.
Heisman Trophy: Joe Burrow, Jalin Hurts, Chase Young, Jonathan Taylor.
Analysis: Still close, but Joe Burrow is looking more and more like the winner. Jalin Hurts had a mixed game last week, and unless Chase Young goes on a wild sack chase, he’ll find it very hard to win. Jonathan Taylor has been coming on of late, and this week’s game against Minnesota will show whether or not he can perform on the big state.
Big 3 Games of the Week: Ohio State-Michigan, Alabama-Auburn, Wisconsin-Minnesota.
Analysis: Playoff tickets ride on these 3 games. OSU faces its biggest challenge of the year against an improving Michigan team. OSU 28-20. Can Alabama win without Tua T? Look for the Alabama defense to be the difference as Alabama triumphs 20-17. The edge in the Wisconsin-Minnesota game goes to Minnesota. They have the better QB and should be able to contain Jonathan Taylor enough to win 24-17
Big Games Remaining: SEC Championship, Big 10 Championship, Big 12 Championship, PAC 12 Championship, ACC Championship.
Analysis: The final determinant of who gets into the playoffs is certainly on the line. Look for LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Utah and Clemson to win these games.
G-5 Team: Memphis and Cincinnati clash in an elimination game. Look for a Memphis win. It should come down to Memphis and Boise State, with Boise State my pick to win the bowl berth.
