The Season So Far-week –Week 12

1st 4: LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia

2nd 4: Oregon, Alabama, Utah, Oklahoma

3rd 4: Penn St, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan

Analysis: Big shakeup what with Minnesota losing and Alabama losing Tua Tagovailoa. Oregon and Utah moved into position to claim a playoff birth. LSU looks set until the SEC Championship, and Clemson is almost a lock. Ohio State has a huge game with Penn State this week. A loss would likely mean that the Pac teams could move into the top 4. Michigan continues to improve and returns to the top 12 for the first time in about 10 weeks. Oklahoma stayed alive with a tight win over Baylor.

My Picks for the Playoff: Ohio State, LSU, Clemson, Oregon

Analysis: Ohio State would be number 1 in the playoff rankings if they beat the last 2 teams on their schedule, Penn State and Michigan and beat another top 25 team in the BIG championship game. Georgia might have to win the SEC Championship. If not, the winner of the Oregon-Utah PAC championship or Oklahoma, could get the 4th spot. Alabama, without Tua, is very marginal.

Most surprising: Minnesota, Baylor, Utah

Analysis: All have one loss, and at least one could still make the playoffs. Utah appears to have the best chance. But they must win out and beat Oregon in the PAC championship. Not impossible. Minnesota really came out of nowhere, and if they win out, they would play for the BIG championship with a chance to make the playoffs. Baylor will likely play Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship, and the same scenario is there with winning out.

Most disappointing: Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Northwestern

Analysis: Arkansas continues losing everything in the SEC and even against lesser teams in the FBS. Georgia Tech is a very weak team in a not that strong ACC. Only 2 wins on the year. Northwestern has only two wins and one is over U Mass, which has given up an incredible 580 points this year.

Heisman Trophy: Joe Burrow, Jalin Hurts, Justin Fields.

Analysis: Just 3 this week with Joe Burrow the clear leader. Tua T is out since his season is over. Jalin Hurts pulled Oklahoma on his back and brought the team back from sure defeat against Baylor. Justin Fields has looked good in every game, but plays very little since Ohio State has routed every team it’s played. He finishes with Penn State and Michigan and that gives him a chance to move up.

Big 3 Games of the Week: Penn State-Ohio State, Texas AM-Georgia, Texas-Baylor.

Analysis: Ohio State can win the Big 10 East with a win over Penn State. Ohio has the edge on both offense and defense and should win by a score of 38-17. Georgia must keep winning if it’s to make it to the playoff and a home game against Texas AM could be a stern test. Expect this one to be close with Georgia and its defense beating out Texas AM by 23-20. Baylor can still make the playoffs and must beat Texas to keep it’s hopes alive. I see Baylor winning 38-28.

Big games left: Ohio State-Michigan, Wisconsin-Minnesota, Alabama-Auburn, SEC Championship, Big 10 Championship, PAC 12 Championship, Big 12 Championship.

Analysis: 10 teams have a somewhat reasonable chance to make the playoffs. Ohio State will have to go to Michigan to make that happen. The Wisconsin-Minnesota game will almost surely decide the Big 10 West championship and keep Minnesota’s slim playoffs hopes alive. If Alabama believes in miracle, they have to win convincingly over Auburn. Oklahoma-Baylor and Oregon-Utah championship winners, could be using style points to grab the last spot, assuming it’s actually open. Georgia must win the SEC Championship to assure a berth and one loss LSU would then also get in.
