The safety in the pats game made me unclear on a rule...

What would have happened if the punter got the pass out and made a forward pass... isnt he considered the QB?? wouldnt that have been an incomplete pass?? even if it was intentional grounding that wouldnt have been that bad..

Intentional grounding would have been bad, but a normal incomplete pass would have given the Colts the ball at the 45. The punter did the right thing.

Yeah, I think it would have been an incomplete forward pass. But I disagree about the bold - ball would have been put at the spot of the foul. NE was better off with the safety -> the guy really should have just tossed the ball through the back of the EZ.

An incomplete pass would have given the Pats the ball at the 44. But intentional grounding is a spot foul, I think, so that wouldn't have been good. It would have been Pats ball around the 1.

The thing that confused me was the Colts guy touched the ball. But I assume that didn't constitute possession.

DIdnt realize intentional foul was a spot foul, but does it matter, i doubt that he planned on letting the ball go out of the endzone!!!

If the punter had passed it forward to the guy who was back there with him it would have been a simple incomplete pass... providing that guy was an eligible receiver.

Lol, yeah. It's not the NBA. You can't bounce a ball off of someone out of bounds.

How weird would that play have looked if it ended up as a incomplete pass...

Yeah, I thought it might have been until I saw the replay. That's what he was clearly trying to do. It was odd that neither Gumbel nor Dierdorf mentioned it.

Thats why i asked the question... nobody mentioned it so i thought there might be a rule in place to prevent this...

Trying, sure, but he clearly wasn't close to getting it off.

No it was a fumble. I don't think anyone has claimed otherwise. As I said, live it looked to me as if it possibly might have been. Even a 2 handed push/shovel of the ball forward would have been a forward pass. On replay it was obvious he didn't come close to pulling it off.

An incomplete (legal) pass would have been Colts ball, turned over on downs at the line of scrimmage.

A complete (legal) pass would be Pats ball if they got a first down, Colts ball if they did not. The ball would be placed where the receiver was downed.

An illegal downing of the ball would have been at the spot of the foul.

Taking a safety would have been the safest thing to do (in hindsight), give 2 points and free kick the ball to Indy. Then you would be able to punt next week.

Right, I got the teams mixed up.

And don't forget that even if he chucked the ball out of bounds and didn't get flagged for intentional grounding (which would be a safety if thrown in the endzone) a flag would most likely have been thrown for ineligible receiver downfield. Not sure if that would be a spot foul and therefore a safety as well though
