I say yes on Perez if he's willing to do a team friendly contract which he might do. He's done very well out of the pen and gives us flexibility.

I assure you Perez is only signing somewhere as a starter. If the Rangers float the bullpen idea to him he's gone.

One thing not mentioned is you need some young guys in the pen who have options so you can float between majors and minors

The less trash the rest of your pitching is the less you have a need for that, right? In fact I think we have seen a good deal less of that this year than in previous years. Most of this year's is due to sending down an ineffective guy and trying someone else.

I wouldn't bet on that being the case. And, I doubt any teams are going to give him a multi-year deal to start. Now if he goes to our starting rotation now and performs well in a deep playoff run, that all changes.

The idea that a particular starter could not find a role in the pen with at least moderate success is premature. No one thought Perez would be successful there and now some of the same ones who thought that don't think we can afford to do without him there the rest of the year. A lot of decent to good relievers were once failed or struggling starting pitchers.

I think some dislike a guys performance as a starting pitcher so much, that they tend to think they are just overall failures. That is a little harsh and very premature to me.
