Ok 4 but maybe agreements made prior to free agency for the 2. We are in the drivers seat there

Yes I get the risk with 2 many youngbloods but I don’t think they go over luxury tax due to relief pitcher signings

At some point we have to trust some guys but some we will have to trade or let loose
I think we risk with youngbloods but on the offensive side of the team which is why I think we will see Carter, Langford, Crim, Foscue and at least 1 more opening the season on the 26 man roster but we went the Youngblood pitchers with Anderson, Speas and (these have been around a little longer) Hernandez, Leclerc, Sborz etc and they were failures. We’re either going to have to pursue free agent relievers or keep going the half-ass route and watching this pitching staff blow around 50% of save opportunities

I do understand they won't go over the luxury tax.

What percentage of the overall spending this offseason do you think should go to relievers. I will say somewhere very, very close to 100%, maybe depending on who the trade acquisition is. If he is one of the 9th inning guys that makes the needed reliever budget smaller.

And whether Stratton or Perez are 2 of the signings or not, I imagine their money will fall in line with relievers in free agency, which to me, they, for all intents and purposes, are.

Overhauls are less expensive than upgrades FWIW

If they had been able to develop Speas, Church and Lee, we wouldn't be needing anything but a closer and a long guy, most likely.

Ideally you sign Montgomery but Heaney is in the mix and so is Bradford who should start
Maybe we move Heaney or Gray for relief pitching
Garver may be a budget casualty

Otherwise most roster activity should go to relief pitching. We don’t need OFs and no DH unless we keep Garver. Honestly Ive wondered if he can play some 1st base

And a lot of times, very disappointing. Now if you are overhauling a starter into a reliever like Moore, then that is fine.

You need stability and dependability in your top 4 guys though.

If we sign Montgomery and Garver, there will not be much left for relievers at all. Maybe one substandard closer or two mediocre middle innings guys.

So I do hope we are in the trade market for pitching too

What do you think about my idea of trading for AAA starting pitching depth?

I am not saying our relief corps does it need an overhaul. It is just difficult to do with a competing marketplace full of players unless you drastically overspend

I like it and we might pick up one extra at end of free agency as well

Roster moves ahead

Other than the pen, I think the rest is fine.

Leclerc NO
Marten NO
Speas maybe/maybe not
Stratton YES
Burke YES
Kelly strong maybe
Above average Closer
Above average late inning (8-9) reliever
Above average late innings (7-9) reliever
I say yes on Perez if he's willing to do a team friendly contract which he might do. He's done very well out of the pen and gives us flexibility.

I don't see Gray as a reliever.

Anything more than 40% of what he’s getting this year is too much

One thing not mentioned is you need some young guys in the pen who have options so you can float between majors and minors
