Sportrac estimates the Rangers are about $55 million under the Luxury Tax Threshold for 2024. That doesn't include the arbitration figures that are still to come. So arbitration and free agency combined will most likely be under $55 million to allow wiggle room for deadline additions.

If they add the right relievers that might just about do it for offsesson spending.

How much are you thinking it would take to bring in Hader & 4 or 5 other relievers? Thinking it would take 12-13M for Hader in 2024 and around 25M for 4 or 5 good relievers.

I know but would it count as part of the payroll? if it does then trade him
Yeah, it would count against the payroll for luxury tax purposes, so they would have to trade him. And even then they might have to pay a portion to get the other team to take him.

That works for me. Don’t want him on the team.
Was Pierce Johnson on your list of relievers? I can’t find the list

Rangers will look to add 2-3 relievers, a DH, and possibly a back end starting pitcher. It just isn't feasible economically to add 4-5 new relievers when there are other needs.

I also expect either Garcia or Tavares to be traded. Nate Lowe will be moved for the right offer as well, but I'm not sure of his contract status. I fully expect Duran to stay a Ranger.

Just guessing, but I think the closer in free agency would cost closer to $15 million or a tad more.

Three other late inning guys would probably cost at least $8 million, maybe a little more.

If you get 2 closer types the second one may cost $10-13 million.

I think for 4 of the late inning/closer types would cost minimum $40 million.

I don't even know that they will spend that much, total, in free agency.

If they trade for one of those top 4 relievers then they could maybe afford a 5th reliever.

If they do fix the bullpen like that, then all of a sudden we don't have to score so much to win games and we don't have to wear starting pitchers down like we did Eovaldi early in the year.

I think he was the guy who was on the bubble. I'm not sure now if I included him or not. I will try to find the list.

I guess that depends on how you prioritize the needs.

Myself, I prioritize at least 4 late inning guys by far over any other need. Probably the 5th reliever as well.

Not disagreeing but I don’t see them paying 25 to 28M for 2 closers. 15M for Hader and maybe 6-8M for a Hicks or both Johnson and then 4 to 6M each for Stratton, Pagan, Moore, W. Peralta. That’s 41 to 53M

I don't see them doing half of the things I want them to do for the pen.

I do think you are underestimating what it will take to sign relievers in general. The market paid more last year and it will give up again.

Right but for 13 million, they probably keep him

Look at what Moore and David Robertson are making this year. About $18 total for the two of them. Combined they probably get $20 million in 2024, I would think.

I am wondering if the Rangers miscalculated the going price for FA relief pitchers last season
Maybe that was a factor as prices did take a drastic jump

But lol yes they have never been constant buyers in that market regardless

By the time they signed Heaney they knew what the relief market had become. They made a decision to go after another starter instead of a couple of relievers at that point.

The question is, will they do something similar again? Will they spend on starting pitching and hitting and scarely spend on tje pen?
