I really wish we had someone to play for Lowe.

Yes because as I see it we have 2 starters we can count on Monty and Dunning. We need a third guy to step it up. Hopefully Eovoldi returns to form or Perez is back to last years form. I have no faith in Gray or Heaney as starters.

The full report from Scott Lucas on Leoter's AAA debut last night:

On a cool, drizzly, rain-delayed night, Jack Leiter made his AAA debut.

Leiter's fastball velocity was down slightly from what we'd seen in Frisco recently, averaging 94.8 and topping at 97.1. Also missing until the 3rd was fastball location near or just beyond the top of the zone, his bread and butter in the Texas League. He tended to place more toward the middle or too high. He actually missed four bats with lower fastballs, but when the opposition made contact, they weren't kidding around. Of 11 in play, seven were 97.6 MPH or better, and all were in an angle range of four to 37 degrees. The results: two homers, two doubles, two singles, and a 393' fly tracked down by CF Elier Hernandez. Several came during a three-run 2nd that threatened to get out of hand, but Leiter fanned Cade Marlowe to strand two.

Leiter had some success with other pitches. The curve in particular had some spice, with three swings resulting in two misses and a foul. He also froze Isiah Gilliam with one on a 2-2 count. Leiter even threw six changeups, with which he missed a bat and got three calls. (Statcast says four changeups. I think Statcast is wrong.) Nobody hit a non-fastball harder than 85 MPH.

Leiter's 1st and 3rd innings were relatively quick and benign. He induced six popups, which are almost as effective as strikeouts in terms of run prevention. Almost. In the 4th, a pop to short left evaded a sliding Wyatt Langford for a single that would hasten Leiter's exit. SS Jonathan Ornelas seemed to have it tracked, but he deferred to Langford at the last moment because Ornelas had a longer and more difficult route.

So, under wet conditions in which Leiter didn't seem to have his best fastball, the more advanced AAA hitters took full advantage. In the game, the teams combined for eight homers and eight doubles, so to some extent, it was just one of those nights for pitchers. Fortunately, Leiter had more help than usual from his other pitches. Recall that Leiter had a start early in his return in which all but nine pitches were fastballs. Given that one month ago, he was entering his seventh week without any real-game activity, I'll happily take where's he's at now.
