One year ago today Darryl Sutter made this deal to the Toronto Maple Leafs:

To TOR: Dion Phaneuf, Keith Aulie and Fredrik Sjostrom
To CGY: Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and Ian White

Toronto still has all three players but Mayers walked away in free agency and White was traded along with Brett Sutter to Carolina for Tom Kostopoulos and Anton Babchuk.

So now the trade looks like this:

To TOR: Phaneuf, Aulie, Sjostrom
To CGY: Stajan, Babchuk, Kostopoulos and Hagman

If the old hockey axiom that the team who gets the best player wins the deal, then you would have to say that Toronto wins the trade. The funny thing is Keith Aulie may turn out to be the best player down the road.

my bias is known but who cares ... for me the sesame street word of the day for this trade is ...

extrication

and I agree with you dash - Keith Aulie: big guy, big character, willing to work and learn ... tough to let go of

I still don't understand why Sutter made this trade. He gave up the best player & best prospect in the deal. Granted it's not like the Leafs are loaded with prospects but it's hard for me not to believe he could have done better trading Phaneuf somewhere else.

I think that's the main beef Flames fans had with the trade at the time...If Sutter would have waited until the off-season, there would have been more teams in play and he could have probably received a better return.

Yeah, pretty bad when he got schooled by Burkie.

And Sutter knew going in that there weren't any first rounders on the tables for a couple of years at least :L
