More on the 16 year-old from Cuba.

Cuban Prospect Lazaro Armenteros Declared Free Agent By MLB

In a subscription-only scouting report from November, Badler called Armenteros one of the most promising players in Cuba, noting that he has “good bat speed, a strong frame and a chance to hit for big power.” Armenteros is “much more well-rounded” than Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who signed with Toronto for a $3.9MM bonus last summer, per Badler. Both MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale have profiled Armenteros relatively recently as well. One AL scouting director told Sanchez that Armenteros is a “front-line guy” that possesses “lots of tools, size, strength and potential.”...

I was interested to see how the amount of replies on this thread compared to last offseason. I was kind of surprised to see how many fewer replies we have had this offseason in comparison. We are on page 123 now and we started on page 123 on Dec. 7, 2014. It took us 36 days longer to get here this year.

Less to bitch about this offseason, I guess.

It's been a very quite off season for the Rangers. I find it hard to remember the site with so little news coming out. The quietest I've ever seen it.

Good. They had us finishing dead last last year.
Those were my first thoughts. Not sure on their rationale since we are starting the year with Hamels and a better BP than we started with last year. I guess we are not a sexy pick for lack of a better word.

Not enough offseason noise.

I don't think they used anything but numbers. I think it highlights the weaknesses of overusing analytics. It seems they did the opposite of looking for a sexy pick. They seemed to have made a numbers cruncher's pick.

Bennie. I think you are right. Seems like they utilize cumulative WAR for all teams to come up with the predicted wins for each team. The fallacy is using only the past to predict the future IMO. Same applies to our pen not on Olneys top ten. We have a young pen with a lot of upside although there is a lack of a dominant closer.

I am sure FG is much more based on analytics than Olney though. Point is we value our youth more then numbers suggest or other writers.

Rangers Top Prospects, No. 3: Last year's top draft pick, Dillon Tate, could be 2016's fastest riser | SportsDay

The Rangers purposely went slowly with Tate after taking him with the fourth overall pick in last year's draft. He worked only 13 innings, including playoffs, in the system.

Tate needed the break. He had gone from 43 1/3 innings as a reliever at Cal-Santa Barbara in 2014 to 103 1/3 innings as a starter, with a summer stint with Team USA between the seasons.
Tate can get the fastball up to 98 mph, and a hard slider is his strikeout pitch. He will work on refining complementary pitches: cutter and change-up. Lightly recruited out of high school, Tate is far from a finished product.

The Rangers will use Tate as a starter, but the bullpen could be in his future. Before the draft, several scouts said Tate had the stuff to be a closer.
