I've got a 5500 watt generator and I had the fridge, a light, the tv, and coffee maker hooked up.

I'll have to look into a transfer switch. My plan was to get a heavy gauge cord and cut the female end off of it and put a dryer plug on it instead. Then I can plug it into the dryer outlet and heat up the panel. I'll have to pull the can out of the meter, but I think they'll forgive me.

That's pretty close to size I have.
You can do the transfer switch yourself, there's a few precautions that come with it. but they should be explained if you google it.
