I guess it's a good thing I wore my waterproof hunting boots this morning. Been quite a pissing contest hereabouts.

just 2 different opinions .. I can respect GG's stance .. I just see the situation from a different angle and giving the other sides story right or wrong .

I read the thread this morning, skipped over a lot of the first two or three pages, but I read the argument, I see both sides, I agree to remain nuetral because I have LIVED through a devasting hurricane a few times. I have a lot of opinions on the matter and the unions/non-unions debate is the last I am worried about when it comes to Hurricane Sandy.

My biggest problem is all the people saying "Help me FEMA, Help me". There is help, and you can PREPARE for it. It's called Flood Insurance people. When you live on the coast and have a home in the flood zone, buy flood insurance. If you don't have a mortgage and someone FORCES you to buy it and you don't, that is your RISK, not the FEDS!! I am really upset with everyone looking for the FEDS to come in on their white steeds and checkbooks and give them money that historically comes from FOUR states; Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and California. (Until the 90s, 70% of the flood premiums were paid by Floridians) These four states are the highest numbers of flood insurance policies sold in this country today, and has been for 20 years. Where does the money come from for FEMA to pay when there is a flood???? FLOOD INSURANCE!!!

IF, by chance, there is substantial proof that the property was damaged by wind, then their homeowners/businessowners/property policy will pay for damages done by wind, but anything that is not a building or the contents in the building that was flooded is only covered by flood insurance. Storm surge is FLOOD. All that damage to the NJ boardwalk and rides in the water, etc., that is FLOOD. You cannot insure for that in the federal program (Hello LLoyds of London). If you bought the coverage, great, the adjusters will be there with checkbooks. If you didn't, get ready to take a big ole dose of FEDERAL bureaucracy with SBA loans (not free money people ~ LOANS) and that's IF you qualify AND you have to BUY flood insurance for the LIFE of the SBA loan.

ok, so I may remain nuetral on the union thing, I will not remain nuetral on the shit I know enough about... I'm sure I will piss off many and sound heartless and cruel.

batter up....

Actually, I gotta side with GG on this one, though he got much hotter under the collar than I would've.

First, I can't agree that those outside crews were scabs. A scab is a strike-breaker, not a temporary or volunteer worker who comes in during an emergency.

Besides, when the power gets knocked out in a major city, people die. Getting the juice back on ASAP has to be the priority. So, if you have these two options, which do you choose?

1. Accept outside help, and get the power fully restored in a few days, with less OT for the local crews, but only a dozen deaths; OR...

2. Turn the outsiders away, and the locals make a shitload of overtime, but the power takes 2 weeks to restore, and a hundred people die in the interim.

In my book, it ain't even close. Power is a public utility, and restoring service after a disaster has to trump all other considerations. Those union workers who feel otherwise should seek work with some other unionized industry, not a public utility.

It's my 'hot button' and having the tv be 24/7 with the calls for FEMA's help, it's festered. I have friends from FL that are in NY (Queens) adjusting claims with no power or heat, can't find gas, and corporate is slow to get their shit together. I have other friends that are loaded up in the local Red Cross convoy heading North. I am so sorry that the restoration after a devasting storm is taking time, but you know what?? NO ONE CAME TO KEY WEST AFTER ANDREW ~ we got our power back in the Keys on our own because the devastion in Miami was so severe, and that's ok. They all came for Georges and they were welcomed, thanked, PAID, and taken care of by all, because we all appreciated them. We prepare for hurricanes. You can only prepare for the worst, pray for the best. The worst is usually what you get, and sometimes you can't prepare enough (WILMA) but the help was slow going because the WORST storm in the history of our country (KATRINA) hit and FEMA gave out $2000 of 'FREE' money to everyone and used funds that should have been more readily available to WILMA victims than they were. Oh, BTW, Katrina is the ONLY storm that FEMA ever gave out the $2000 and they have been trying to retrieve it back from the FRAUD in which it was obtained by the unrightful recepients. Again, maybe heartless, but they didn't deserve it if they didn't pay into the system, and it was used to buy NFL season tickets, Prada bags and shoes, etc. and it made me ill when I was watching it happen. I know there were so many that suffered, but they too could have purchased flood insurance for their stuff (very cheap too) and then the money would have been rightfully theirs and the purchase of their personal goods with Federal flood insurance funds would have been theirs to do with as they choose....
