Bad call. But who was he "directing" the first time he did it?
Besides all that, is he the best option to have in front of the net? I would hate to have that blueline cannon wasted on my team's PP.
He's been their screen man in front when the other team has only 3 defenders for 2 years now. Since they lost Knuble, they haven't had that big body presence in front of the net. Except for Hartnell when they are truly desperate and he more likely to get a goalie interference penalty than get a deflection.
And they are like 1 for their last 6238 on the PP with Pronger and Timonen passing back and forth 78 times at the point before the inevitable turnover.

Definitely a tough way to 'not win', so I sympathize (about as much as I humanly can for Flyers fans) on that play.
However:
1) Your homer goggles are on overdrive if you think Pronger wasn't trying to block Kipper's vision with his arm.
2) The official (in the rulebook, not the press release) rule might not include that you have to face the goaltender, or might not exist at all (it might just be up to ref's discretion to call 'unsportsmanlike conduct').
There is only one person here who thinks he was not trying to block the goalie's view. If it's not in the rule book, it is not a rule. Ref's can't just make up a penalty. This isn't the NFL.
"National Hockey League Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell today issued the following advisory on the interpretation of Rule 75 - Unsportsmanlike Conduct: "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule 75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play."

Again, that's not in the official rulebook. That was an advisory on the interpretation of a rule issued immediately after the Avery incident. It's possible (and likely) that the officials re-examined the rule in the offseason and came up with some guidelines on what to call, but this wasn't made public.
But anyway, the unsportsmanlike penalty is meant to be a catch-all. Just because something isn't explicitly mentionned doesn't mean it can't be called. I mean, if Sean Avery whipped out his dick and started pissing in the opposing goaltender's eyes, would you say it's not an unsportsmanlike penalty because it's not in the above quote?
I saw Pronger put his hand up to Kipper's face, but I don't think he was ever facing him???
He wasnt facing Kipper he was facing the blueline and he was clearly directing Richards with the puck. His arm wasnt even up for maybe a second or two.
