The NHL is a fucking joke. This league has zero integrity. NBA 2.0.

Bad call. But who was he "directing" the first time he did it?

Besides all that, is he the best option to have in front of the net? I would hate to have that blueline cannon wasted on my team's PP.

He's been their screen man in front when the other team has only 3 defenders for 2 years now. Since they lost Knuble, they haven't had that big body presence in front of the net. Except for Hartnell when they are truly desperate and he more likely to get a goalie interference penalty than get a deflection.

And they are like 1 for their last 6238 on the PP with Pronger and Timonen passing back and forth 78 times at the point before the inevitable turnover.

Oh I see. Makes sense. I guess you guys have a boatload of playmakers anyway.

I believe he had two or three PP goals in the playoffs last year from deflections in front. His style of play works pretty well as a makeshift power forward.

Definitely a tough way to 'not win', so I sympathize (about as much as I humanly can for Flyers fans) on that play.

However:

1) Your homer goggles are on overdrive if you think Pronger wasn't trying to block Kipper's vision with his arm.

2) The official (in the rulebook, not the press release) rule might not include that you have to face the goaltender, or might not exist at all (it might just be up to ref's discretion to call 'unsportsmanlike conduct').

There is only one person here who thinks he was not trying to block the goalie's view. If it's not in the rule book, it is not a rule. Ref's can't just make up a penalty. This isn't the NFL.

Here's what I'm saying: I don't think the league actually made the Sean Avery rule official. I couldn't find it in the online rulebook, and that rulebook includes the new headshot rule which makes me think it's pretty up-to-date.

Instead, I think the league just informed the refs that they should call plays like that as 'unsportsmanlike conduct'. If that's the case, it gives the refs a lot of leeway, which isn't the same as 'making up a penalty'.

If someone can find a official rulebook link that includes the Sean Avery rule, and it says 'facing the goalie', then that's a blatantly wrong call. Otherwise, it falls more under the 'weak call that really cost us' variety.

"National Hockey League Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell today issued the following advisory on the interpretation of Rule 75 - Unsportsmanlike Conduct: "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule 75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play."

Again, that's not in the official rulebook. That was an advisory on the interpretation of a rule issued immediately after the Avery incident. It's possible (and likely) that the officials re-examined the rule in the offseason and came up with some guidelines on what to call, but this wasn't made public.

But anyway, the unsportsmanlike penalty is meant to be a catch-all. Just because something isn't explicitly mentionned doesn't mean it can't be called. I mean, if Sean Avery whipped out his dick and started pissing in the opposing goaltender's eyes, would you say it's not an unsportsmanlike penalty because it's not in the above quote?

That made me laugh. A lot.

"Now this is something the other tour guides won't tell you. In this particular cell-block, Machine Gun Kelly had what we call in the prison system, a bitch. And one night in a jealous rage Kelly took a make-shift knife or shiv, and cut out the bitch's eyes. And as if this wasn't enough retribution for Kelly, the next day he and four other inmates took turns pissing into the bitch's ocular cavities. (short pause)

This way to the cafeteria"

I saw Pronger put his hand up to Kipper's face, but I don't think he was ever facing him???

He wasnt facing Kipper he was facing the blueline and he was clearly directing Richards with the puck. His arm wasnt even up for maybe a second or two.

While I agree he was not facing the goaltender, If you watch the replay, you can clearly see him look over his shoulder to see where Kip was looking, and then waved his arm right at eye level. While I personally think nothing of it... He was intentionally trying to blind the goalie with his arm. I dont think that it falls under that rule though. But you cant say he was "directing" Richards, watch the replay.
