Vita Vea is pretty much the perfect player to pair with Kancey

Bucs selected Pitt DL Calijah Kancey with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Kancey (6’0.625/281) was a 3-star recruit, and the 64th-ranked defensive tackle, from Miami, Florida in the 2019 recruiting class, according to 247 Sports. Kancey has the dubious honor of being the second-shortest defensive tackle prospect in this class and the shortest among those likely to be drafted. Add to that his lightest weight in class and we are talking about a prospect that needs to show impressive substance on tape to be taken seriously. Many may think of another diminutive defensive tackle from the same school, but they are very different athletes. Kancey’s calling card is to use his quickness and burst to shoot gaps, slide by blocks, and penetrate quickly. He is adept at swiping blockers’ hands off of him as he blows by to the tune of 16 sacks, 92 tackles, and 34.5 of them for a loss in three years of production. When he is fluid and slippery Kancey is close to unstoppable. But, the problems lie when an Offensive Lineman is able to engage with him. Due to his lack of stature and heft, Kancey quickly gets washed out of a play when he is punched off course and is unable to truly set down an anchor to occupy his given space. Additionally, he can often play himself out of position by moving too quickly in the wrong direction. It remains to be seen how he can handle blockers at the next level rather than those of the ACC.
