Consider the following from Joe Thomas:

"[In 1976] It was the 49ers who traded for Plunkett, getting him from the Pats for quarterback Tom Owen, two first-round picks in 1976, and first- and second-round picks in 1977. And then the 49ers sent second- and third-round picks in 1978, first- and fourth-round picks in 1979, and a second-round pick in 1980 to Buffalo for O.J. Simpson, who at the time was 31."

I'll take Trent!

Yeah, I read that somewhere else... pretty amazing what Bill Walsh accomplished considering he started off with the previous regime putting him at such a disadvantage when it came to his first drafts

its no wonder we were bad from about '73 to '80'? those late '70's were as bad as 2004-2005, maybe worse?

btw - the Carson Palmer trade - if the condition is executed - is a similar situation. you trade away top picks and you've hurt yourself over multiple seasons.

No kidding! Walsh hit on one pick that effectively changed our entire universe.

but recall he didn't start till year 3.

similar idea as this past draft, the class will be judged a LOT by how Kapaernik goes?

The Kapaernic pick will largely be identified with Harbaugh more than with Baalke due to the "QB guru" label that he is associated with...

It will be interesting to see how Harbaugh manages an early clinch (IF that happens), without the possibility of securing a bye. I would expect to see Colin start or at least play quite a bit in that situation.

To be fair, most of the mid 70s suckage predates Thomas.

I don't know Harbaugh so far does tend to do things differently and I wouldn't be surprised if he goes full throttle till the very end.

Which to me is the correct approach even if you are risking injury. Teams that have to fight till the end during the season seem to do better in the playoffs to me.

A comment Harbaugh made to the media following the TB game would seem to support your theory, I just wonder if under different circumstances his strategy would be different as well.

At a minimum, Gore would be rested up, and Kaep will be given the keys for a week. A lot of the vets will be given a break like Willis, V. Davis, J. Smith, maybe Staley.

It would be used as an opportunity to test Kaep.

Alex would still start, to keep him from getting rusty (right?), but then Kaep would go in to get experience, rest Alex, and avoid injury. This is assuming Kaep doesn't somehow get the reigns or Alex doesn't fail and lose his starting job (or is injured already). I don't know how rust/chemistry/running at full speed affects football vs. other sports. I know basketball players sometimes dislike playing after 3-4 days rest because of rust.

Ahh... EaseUrStorm, I didn't read that you said "a week". I was thinking of early clinching.
