They were 11M Under the cap pre cut, I doubt money was the issue.

Dan Bailey’s $3.4 million base salary played a part in his release

“It was certainly a very difficult decision for us,” Garrett said, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.

Garrett admitted finances played a role. Bailey was due to make $3.4 million in base salary this season and count $4.2 million against the cap. Maher will make the minimum $480,000.

The very next paragraph in your link

"But the Cowboys did not ask Bailey to take a pay cut, according to a source, which means their decision came down to more than just money"

I can agree Dallas saw the savings as a plus, but the best I can tell is Maher won the job on performance and almost lost it due to team loyalty to Bailey.

Still not liking this move. I've read a few articles and have yet to read an explanation that I think is accurate and honest. But they obviously had their reason. Time to move on...and welcome to "whatever your first name is" Maher. Go Cowboys!

It was a $$ move. We'll see if it works out for them. Giving up one of the best in the league for a guy with 0 NFL experience.

if the new guy doesn't kick well this year and costs them a game or 2, they will regret this but sometimes it is not hard to replace a kicker or punter with a younger, cheaper model.

the good news is Bailey will end up kicking for someone this year. And we will see if it was just a money dump or if his trend of getting worse every year continues.
