Is he worth that? I only spend that kind of capital if I think head coach is the only piece I’m missing. Much of who we think a coach is will be dependent upon their QB. Is Payton coming with a prime Drew Brees?

As mentioned in the article, this is a bit of a catch 22 for the Broncos. Probably the Cardinals in that mix, too. Those are teams who shouldn't be giving up good draft picks. Teams like the Browns or Texans might work although the Texans would probably provide a package that didnt have a 1st rounder because their picks are pretty valuable.

I think the other issue is that there is a surprising number of good coaches in the league right now imo. The GM might be even more valuable than a coach right now as silly as that sounds (see: new England)

Has Cowboys and Chargers written all over that thing.
well, perhaps Chargers but I know why you say Dallas.

if he coaches in Dallas, it won't be next season. Jerry might fire Mike but bet your ass he's in on Quinn and keeping the draft picks.
Jerry finally has learned; he's got good people doing his drafts

I would put the Chargers as the strong favorite as of right now, tbh. Especially if they faceplant in one and done fashion.

How would you feel about Justin Herbert? That seems very possible.

isnt the Chargers HC new?
If so. Why would they already move on from him?

Defensive HC with bad defenses and underwhelming offense relative to talent level/expectation is gonna get you put on the hot seat, especially with the expectations the Chargers have had the last couple years.

Payton has been reported to prefer the west coast, fwiw.

So we have some suspects here:

Chargers
Rams (McVay retirement)
Cardinals

Cowboys make a lot of sense too, if for whatever reason McCarthy was dismissed. Though that looks less and less likely given how Dallas has played, imo.

I know he said if he came back it would be for LA, but a 1st year HC making the playoffs I highly doubt gets canned.

It's year 2, and the NFL is a not for long business.
oh. wasnt aware it was year 2. Why I was asking if he was new? (dont really follow the Chargers) Just knew Lynn wasnt a HC.

Not sure I see Chargers moving on from Staley. They seem like one of the 'it' teams in the AFC W moving forward and if Im a confident owner Im seeing enough optimism to move forward. If they do move on from Staley, i could only imagine it would have something to do with playing Herbert when he is hurt.

Not sure I see Sean Payton wanting to play for the Colts.

I'm not sure which teams would be willing to part with a high pick for Payton if other options are available. Frank Reich, possibly Jim Harbaugh if he chooses to come back, Dan Quinn. There's a few guys with NFL experience as well as a few coordinators out there. I think teams are less likely to trade draft capital these days for a coach.
