Report: Jets want to re-sign Damon Harrison
We all know that Pot Roast is likely a goner. When he does go, that'll leave a huge hole in our one-tech spot. Right now, we've got no one to fill that position, which is a huge key to any 3-4 defense.
One guy we can/should consider is Damon Harrison, the Jets stud NT who's about to hit FA. He's 27, 6'4" and 350 pounds and is a guy that can clog the middle and rush the passer. According to the linked article, his worth is about $5M a year. Considering we paid Pot Roast $4.45M last year, $5M a year for Harrison would be a bargain. Essentially, you'd be swapping Pot Roast for Harrison. It also would be in keeping with McCloughan's stated view that we won't be a major player in FA. A $5M a year deal won't make us major FA players in the least. And that would be equally true even if we had to pay him a bit more.
The chances are that the Jets won't be able to keep Harrison. They've got less than $20M in cap space and they still need to sign Mo Wilkerson, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Chris Ivory. With all the money tied up in those guys, I think Harrison hits the open market on March 9. When he does, it's time to make a deal.
