I was referring to the 4 and 5 star recruits that constitutes out recruiting these days. He got some but most were overlooked raw talent that he molded and raised up to champions.

You are right for running backs but look at the quarterbacks. Osborne looked for a special individual. One who could make decisions and run his option.

Even in his words he didn't rely on recruiting services (and they were around then) but on doing the homework to find the player that fit his scheme. He recruited Florida, Texas and California but look at how many players came from Nebraska and the surrounding states. He heavily recruited Omaha, Lincoln, Kansas City and even Wichita.

Look at our recruits now. How many Omahan's do we have on scholarship? Less than a handful.

Here are Osbornes words himself

Former Nebraska head coach Tom Osborn on the football recruiting process and how it has changed | Recruiting 101

“We tried to look at film, some schools looked heavily at the recruiting services’ ratings…we didn’t pay much attention to that. We seldom got a Parade All-American here and some schools would get three to seven Parade All-Americans every year. We were able to do very well against those teams. I thought it was mostly a matter of doing your homework… We also never promised or inferred playing time which is very common now.”

The main difference is that back in the TO days we had 310 pound farm kids walking on from Nebraska..........

Back then those big guys got no national attention because the recruiting services didn't exist, and everyone just thought all the players come from Texas, California, or anywhere down in SEC country...........so those Nebraska kids just walked on and ultimately had the best work-ethic out of anyone on the team.

Now days the damn kids grow up thinking they are superheros because everyone tells them that they are. They're on TV when they're 16 years old and they are the next Jerry Rice en sech.

We very well may win this football game, but it won't be because of our recruiting. Ask Notre Dame how having an overload of 5-star recruits is doing for them

You can't play both sides of the fence. You post in the thread where you laugh at people who scoff at recruiting and now you backtrack. The rule is, he who recruits the best usually wins. In fact, he who recruits the best wins most of the time. I don't know this to be a cold hard fact, but I'd bet the past 10 years National Champions were Top 10 in recruiting. Nobody said there aren't exceptions to the rule. If you read my post you'd know that. Coaching is important, but you first need to have the horses. We have more horses than Wisky and he who has the most horses wins most of the time. Yes, recruiting can be credited if we win- which I fully expect we beat Wisky 27-13.

Callahan had some decent recruiting classes. We see how they fared. Coaching 3 stars well will beat 5 stars with lesser coaching every time. (Once you get past pee wee level.)
