I'm perfectly fine with Marleau's production during the regular season, MOST OF THE TIME.

He's so damn hit or miss in the playoffs though. And if he is as valuable as this article states he is, then when he isn't producing in the playoffs, the team isn't. That is the problem. Being as valuable as he is, he needs to perform when it's most needed.

Haha.. I think you missed the opening paragraph? Let me bold one part for you real quick:

As the idiom goes, even a stopped clock is right twice a day. And so Patrick Marleau's listless performance against the St. Louis Blues last spring proved to be life-affirming for his hordes of braying detractors, overjoyed that after years of crucifying Marleau for lackluster postseasons (despite the fact that only four players scored more playoff goals between lockouts), they had finally been vindicated by a five-game sample.

:p

How many players in the NHL have been in the playoffs EVERY season since the last lockout?

I would sure hope he'd be up there after like 100 (exaggeration) playoff games.

Since the last lockout, where does Marleau rank in playoff games played WITHOUT winning a cup?? Im guessing he's somewhere near the top of that list

He is probably second behind Joe Thornton :)

Winning a Cup? Let's just make a NHL final first....if that is even possible for this team. I still regret the pre-Thornton season when all the stars were lined for them...the year they played Calgary in the Western Conference Finals and stunk it up at home where they had home ice advantage and blew that series.
They would have played a very beatable Tampa Bay that year. That one still stings.

Argh the memories stil hurt. And we gave them Kippur so that they could beat us.

Marleau is a good player that shouldn't be counted on to be a clutch performer. I kind of wish he was always separated from Thornton's wing. What would his career be like if he always centered his own line?

Marleau and Thornton are only as good as their supporting cast. And right now that's Nemo, most of the defense and couture. Everyone else has pretty much been an anchor

I think the funny thing is when people on this board bag in marleau and try and compare him to say zetterbergs and crosbys in the league is they fail to realize when those two score goals they are getting support goals from guys like draper or max talbot. Marleau doesn't get that
