He doesn't make many highlight reel catches because he doesn't have to. He just glides under the ball.
You are very right. Marlon Byrd would make the highlights because he was always diving all over the place for balls. Diving looks good but it reveals you were very close to not making a catch... that is dangerous.
I think a good MLB CFer doesn't have to dive because they are positioned well, get a jump with the ball off the bat and have the speed and glove to get to the ball to make routine catches. Less drama means fewer highlights on MLB Tonight ... but also less risk of missing the ball.
First time I saw Gentry at Frisco his ability to close to the ball was incredible. There are very few CFers in all my years of watching baseball that make getting to and fielding deep balls or balls in the gap look so effortless.
His throw (and Kinsler's relay) doubling Wells from deep Left Center was incredible.
