It's not necessarily taking dives for cash. It can be things like their crew leaking injuries to gamblers (as happened with Davydenko). The top 30-50 players make plenty of cash. I doubt any of them outright lost matches unless they hung around shady people (there have been rumors surrounding former #1 Marat Safin for years).

Once you start talking about Challengers, where the Winner's prize can often be in the 12-20k range? Yeah, it's not hard to imagine a player taking a first or second round loss for a few thousand dollars, especially if they are on the downside of their career and don't need the ATP points.
