Anybody seen our strong safety? I just took another look at our depth chart, looking for the guy that is going to step up and play. Too old, or too small, or not good?

Do we pull one out of our ass?

Anybody seen a legitimate strong safety laying around anywhere?

They were in the draft the last 2 season. BB just took a 7th rd pick in Wilson, an UDFA in Harmon a little to early. Could of had an Elam, Rambo, Matthieu, and a bunch of others that would have made a differance. I know everyone is all wet in the shorts over Hightower, but I would of rather had Jones and Harrison last yr. No one around here wanted Harrison on this team. I bet you wish you had him now. We could of had Bobby Wagnor and KJ Wright later in the draft to do what Hightower has done, he is good, but nothing special.

We can not have a SS unless he can play FS CD TE DE and ILB. Those guys are tough to find

All I know is they have one starting safety that was drafted to play cornerback and isn't a physical type player and the other...is not too impressive:

Tavon Wilson, last year's reach who reportedly is on the bubble.
Duron Harmon, this year's reach that appears to have problems coming up to make the tackle.
Adrian Wilson, a player on the downslope of his career.
Steve Gregory, a slight player that faded quickly last year.
Nate Ebner, another reach drafted because he could play rugby...???

Belichick's record at drafting NFL quality safeties for this team speaks for itself.

IMO...The Pats starters at safety would be ST players on the Seahawks and Steelers.

Time to blow the group up. At the very least they need to draft a solid -- HIGHLY RATED -- player that can be an impact/physical presence next to McCourty. If Belichick has a brain he should make a trade or start looking at safeties on August 31st. I said it last year and I'll say it again...the one word I do not want to hear when the Pats are on the board in the first three rounds is REACH. You have a chance to get a player rated in the top 96 and you take a player rated as a 6th rounder or UFA??? Where's your BRAIN? It's pathetic and the average fan of the NFL Draft knew it when he did it.

If Taylor Mays is released by Cinn, you take a shot with him? I would. Maybe a change of place can help, and he cannot be as bad as what we have now. Now I am sure BB things different and will not touch him. He was good at USC.

Do you think he'd be better? I mean, he's a kid who got benched last year and then cut by Cinci - not exactly a home for elite defensive talent. I want upgrades as much as the next guy, but adding more bad safeties isn't going to improve anything.

I think this is an overreaction. I don't think anyone we have is a world beater, but we're not in as bad shape as you imply.

I hope you are right, JDM. I was frustrated when I posted. I looked up SS ratings and Gregory is rated higher than one might expect. One article said something to the effect that the NFL is not looking for the rock hard hitter anymore as they are looking for a safety that can cover. Sounds like a free safety to me? Either way, we have Wilson if he is not used up. Maybe he'll get active during regular season.

First cuts tomorrow. 53 man Roster next week. Maybe a SS will fall from the clouds?

Kenny Phillips - SS ... released by ? philly ? today.
Don't know who beat him out for a spot. I believe he was IR'd the last half of last year w/the Giants.
Worth a visit and a medical evaluation?

This all goes back to BB and his silly ass hybrid mentality, it might work on the O Line a guard switching to center or tackle, maybe an OLB to DE but I don't think the hybrid mentality works for all positions. You couple this with some of attributes BB seems to like and the fact he seem to wants to draft players from friends, ie Meyer and Schiano the result is you are not getting the best player when you make your selection. Maybe when all the cuts are done we can pick someone up but I am of the opinion that BB is not some great drafter, he has had some success but a lot of failure too

Well I happen to think that Cinn secondary is better than ours. They have some depth over there. He may not be as good as we want, but I am willing to bet that he is better than Ebner and Harmon,

Harmon's a rookie. Mays can be better than Harmon without being the right call over Harmon.

Ebner's a special teamer. Does Mays give you the special teams presence that Ebner does? Is he as affordable as Ebner is? Ebner only sees the field at safety if we have a massive run of injuries.

So I take it you would rather have Harmon and Ebner? I am sure he can play ST. Kid was great in college. Worth a shot if you ask me.

If they see something that makes them want to take a shot on him, fine. I don't feel strongly about keeping Ebner over him (I think you give your 3rd round draft picks a chance, though). I just very much doubt that he'd step in and do anything that matters much to our team's defense. It'd be a back of the roster move, barely worth caring about.
