I'm starting to believe that there is no point in firing him now. The pool of available HC candidates is unknown at this time. This season is lost. Take your time and make sure you replace him with the best available candidate, not just the next warm body.

I think its fairly clear that the FO doesn't believe O'Connell is the next guy. Otherwise, they would have pulled the trigger. Gruden is gone, its just a matter of who replaces him and when.

If I'm Gruden, I'd resign for two reasons.

First, my record doesn't get worse and second, I get to control the narrative with respect to "why?" I'm no longer there. Nobody's going to ask him why he was fired, that's obvious and it works well for Bruce Allen. If I resign, almost everyone will ask me why?, and I get to talk about the inside stuff. It might sound resentful or bitter, but I'll be damned if I'd give a pass to those things that prevented me from being the best that I could have been! Call it, "looking out for the next guy!"
