Missed the "maybe" part of my post 'eh? Smith showed huge promise as a rookie. Maybe (there's that tricky word again) he can build off of that going forward. Compton is on pace for 170 tackles this season. Unlike Foster we see Compton making plays every week, including the forced fumble on Daulton that could have saved a loss.. He is limited physically which is why I said we need a monster next to him. But again MAYBE he is a keeper you can build a good defense with as I said.

You said it yourself, Compton is limited physically which make him inferior when out there. We need an upgrade at both ILB positions. We need Cravens to inherit the SS position and gain valuable experience there this year and likely a show stopper on our DLine in the next draft.

Neil Olkewwicz was limited physically too but he made plays. Compton kind of reminds me of Okly. He has 70 tackles this year.. I just did a check of random teams. The Jets leader has 33, the Eagles top guy has 49 (1 less game), Steelers leader, again one less game, is 48. Compton's number is in Sean Lee territory.

I'm still not sure about Compton. He has a huge heart and gets the maximum out of his physical abilities. But at the end of the day, he is slow. He has a real hard time getting from side line to side line to plug a hole. because of this, he has to jump holes, meaning he has to guess sometimes which gap to shoot. Sometimes he is right and sometimes he leaves a huge hole up the middle and takes himself out of the play. How many times have we seen a RB run right up the gut unimpeded for a huge gain? That's our ILBs usually shooting the wrong gap and leaving a huge hole.

It isn't the amount of tackles that matters...it is where you tackle them, the gap you fill, and the tackles you miss.

We are playing a one gap system, if he is hitting something other than his gap he is not running the D Barry is employing. Whether we are running a 3-4 or 4-3 each one of the 7 guys who are not DBs are assigned a gap.

Yeah these are good points. Compton is slow and maybe you are right, he may shoot the wrong gap. Still when compared to Foster he is a keeper. Wonder what they think of Spaight or the rookie who got hurt.

shark you beat me to the punch about the state of the union but i am going to approach it more "long term "

1) KC has to be the qb we build with money or not . he isnt a star but with weapons he can be effective

2) our run game is fine , we are running more , the 3 headed monster will produce

3) my apologies to stymie but garcon is the must resign while jackson may not be , i will go against the grain and say we need both money be damned . the less weapons KC has the less effective he will be . davis is also a must resign
4) our O/line appears to be set , Long seems to be the real center we have longed for and we developed him . kujo is on a good path in development (but needs work )
5) gruden should be our HC our OC is doing well and barry has warts but he is getting the most out of the talent we have
6) the d/line has two guys we can build with , TM (next year ) and Baker . the rest are old , role players , and BU's . we will need to inject some young talent here
7) compton and mason are stop gap special teams guys , cravens has potential , but an upgrade here is needed
8) our CBS are fine , but safety is a huge issue with age and talent deficiencies an upgrade is needed here as well

9 ) we are in year 2 of the SM era . i think we have forgotten that we arent a year in year out contender yet . we are an avg team in talent and in play . we have not had back to back winning seasons in 20 plus years and yet expectations are for back to back playoff appearances

10 ) the fact is we are still in the playoff hunt and if we beat the boys , giants and eagles we should be there we also need to beat the packers and cards as our WC competition . however if we fall short its all part of the learning process

11) so yes its cool to be frustrated , but understand we are at the start of the journey

1. QB.. KC is the guy that they are building with and they just might make that official this off-season with a long term deal. He can and has been effective, the question is as you've said, how much does "effective" cost? Someone wrote on another thread that Sm has a price already set for him and I agree, If Kirk and his agent come hat in hand asking for 24M per. There could be another FT awaiting him.

2. RB...I really thought that we passed up a couple of higher caliber guys in the last draft. I've gotta agree with @gkekoa, If Leonard Fournette or Wayne Gallman comes out and is available they take one of these guys. I wonder what they can get for Jones at this point other than a Simpson's character's "HA-HA."

3. WR...Still can't bring myself to agreeing on P. Garcon earning 10M or more at age 31. The catch is I also don't see signing DJax for that kind of money considering his annual health questions. Given that, DJax is still the better choice because what he brings, Garcon never had. If they can get Jackson and a not too too expensive price and somehow convince Garcon that he shouldn't try to get as much as he can in his final years then OK. Pretty sure no matter what happens, drafting or picking up a FA is going to happen even if both are bought back.

4. OL...I'm not comfortable with this group, mainly because outside of TN, who steps in when the injury bug bites? Still concerned with Trent and the pounding he takes annually at LT. Long might be the guy but, aren't we right back at square one if he goes down?

5. DL...We have got to bolster this bunch, so I'm expecting a fresh infusion of Knuckle scrapers in the draft possibly a FA or two.

1) You offer 20 million but pay up to 24.

3) You try to sign PG for around 4 mil/season and DJ for 7 mil/season. If not, look elsewhere. We have JC and hopefully Doctson works out.

4) OL is solid with solid depth. Yes we need a backup center but that is it.
