in the 20 games he played against Norris nominated defensemen (Chi, Nas, Bos), he got 10 points.
in the 5 games he played against a team without a nominated d-man (SJ), he got 12 points.

(jpaterson)

seems the nominating committee knew what they were talking about.

yes. had to go against three Norris nominated defensemen, two Vezina nominated goalies, and exorcise a demon in a pairtreeeeeee (Chi).
I'm sure Henrik was injured fairly early on in the playoffs, and he still got 22 points in 25 games.
Daniel not to shabby with 20 points in 25 games.
they are playing game in, game out against the top defense and top shutdown forwards the other teams have to offer.

back to back Art Ross trophies, and people are questioning them? ridiculous

Sedins are fine and still in their prime, Thomas was sublime and it was the Bruins time to shine.

Vancouver is going to have to make some changes, they won't be able to afford to keep all their UFAs. But with the core they have, I wouldn't be surprised to see them back in the SCFs next year. Detroit has some huge question marks on defense right now, Nashville just seems stuck in neutral every year, Chicago isn't going to be any better, and San Jose is so demoralized I don't see them being a threat at all anymore.

Sometimes you have to lose before you can win, so maybe Vancouver can follow in the footsteps of teams like the '09 Pens, the '97 Wings, etc. The Sedins, Kes, and Edler are locked down. I think Gillies needs to shed a few guys like Lapierre and bring in a more calming veteran presence. But they have a pretty strong window the next few years.

we aren't in that bad of shape.
AV clearly doesn't want to play Ballard (chose rookie Tanev and Edler with 2 broken fingers over him), so presumably his $4.2 mill will go somewhere.

for UFAs:
- defense
I don't know if Salo will retire, but if he stays, he'll be back at a significant reduction to his current $3.5.
Alberts - useful, but replaceable. $1.0-1.5m
Bieksa and Ehrhoff - I don't think we can keep both. I have changed my view on this from the beginning of the year, but I think Bieksa has to be the priority. He has become a rock back there, and Ehrhoff's skillset are more matched by the incoming Tanev. Also, he was +19 in the regular season, but -13 in the playoffs. that's a bit worrisome (by comparison, Bieksa was +6 in the playoffs, and faced the tougher matchups).
- forwards
Torres ($1.0m) and Higgins ($1.6m) both were quite useful players, but again, not irreplaceable. I would keep both if possible.
Glass and Tambellini - don't care either way.

Tanev and Hodgson will be full-timers next season, both on rookie deals.
so the only real threat is if we lose both Bieksa and Ehrhoff.

I mentioned in another thread that the battle and emotion I saw from Kesler after game 7 reminded me of Crosby the year they made it to the finals and lost. Kesler in beast-mode is a pretty special player, and if (big if) the Sedins get any traction deep in the playoffs, that is a wicked 1-2 punch.

You know me and my Michigan native tire-pumping... I would love to see Kesler raise the Cup. That dude wants it bad, and is a one man wrecking crew out there in the playoffs. He might not have put up the greatest numbers, but you know every time he's on the ice. So do opposing players.

lol... dude, let me tell you something. I honestly, truly, sincerely, COMPLETELY believed that this was the Sharks' year. I swear, I knew they were going to win the Cup. After watching them fold like a cheap suit, even though I kind of don't like the fucking team, I was actually a little disappointed, let down, and frustrated with them.

I cannot fucking imagine what it would be like to be a Sharks fan. All that damn talent, all just wasted. It's like driving a Ferrari that desperately needs an oil change and new spark plugs. You know something incredible should be happening, but it's all very mediocre and pathetic.

I repped every Sharks fan I could find after the series, and I think I need to go back and do it again for you poor sorry fucks.

Thats the media.

Interesting thread. Let me make a key distinction. I don't think there is any doubt that the Sedins had a bad series and should bear significanct responsibility for their team's loss. The trouble I have is the NEXT step the media takes. "They have no heart" "They have no drive" "These kind of players don't get it done in the playoffs" We heard stuff like that. No, they had a bad series and were outplayed by Chara/Seidenberg, who are a really strong defensive pair. You can never judge a career, a character, etc. by one series or one playoffs, but they want to do it all the time. They want to be the first to make that next step. And part of the problem is - that next step isn't their job!

Media used to be about reporting and about informing. Telling us what the perspective of a player or coach is, telling us about an injury, telling us what happened. At some point it became about what WILL happen, about WHO someone is, and about WHERE they rank in the pantheon. A moment becomes everything and based on a sample of a couple games we are supposed to believe that Max Talbot is the most clutch player in the NHL and Henrik Sedin and Roberto Luongo are heartless chokers.

It gets a little ridiculous, but that's what happens when you have a 24/7 news cycle to fill.

Also there is a large population of slack jawed drunken dolts who need to be told what to believe.

I remember Eddie. I remember before the playoffs started that you were thinking this might be the year for the much maligned Sharks. I love this team, but they truly do break your heart. It's tough being a Sharks fan, but hey, at least the regular seasons are nice. I mean, it's not much of a consolation, but it's better than knowing you have no shot at all from game 1.

lol, you just described perfectly what it's like being a Sharks fan much better than I ever could and I've been following them for a LONG time. Kudos.

Yeah. Fuck. Fuckin 'A. Fuck me sideways.....next season will be another groundhog day.....maybe this is the year.....:frusty:

As much as being a Sharks fan breaks your heart, we never had a year where we won the Presidents trophy, and got all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in a year where we never trailed in a single series- and lost.

The culmination of Sharks losses is probably tougher, but this one for the Canucks really seems heartbreaking.

Am I going crazy here, or wasn't Lidstrom nominated, not anybody from Chicago?

yah I changed my tune on Bieksa too ... especially when paired with Hamhuis ... we saw what happens to Bieksa when Hamhuis goes down but he still played with physicality ... as for Ehrhoff, Im probably being tough on him since he played through the shoulder injury but he wasnt pushing the puck like he can in the final round

re Hodgson: I really hope so ... but I dont know with AV around if thats going to happen
