It's not fair at all how the NFC East and AFC South get rewarded with home playoff games for playing like shit all year long.

I have no problem with the current format. Winning a division should be rewarded. It is generally understood that winning a division is a teams primary goal, not to be confused with the ultimate goal which has something to do with a great big game that Owls go to, I guess.

Yeah. I like the format. But I mean like. A division winner should have a certain win percentage to earn their home game. Like say, oh I don't know, at least .500 maybe?

I think for wildcard weekend, the team with the better record should get homefield. Winning the division shouldn't guarantee a home playoff game if you were in a crappy division.

I really think they should just reseed everyone in conference. Make it so you play all 15 other teams in your conference and the team in the other conference that finished in the same spot as you last year. It is not like there are any big intra conference rivalries cropping up from playing each other once every 4 years.

This makes sense.

I agree... I think it's pretty bad when a team is sub .500 and they host a playoff game because the division sucks... When we won the division at 7-9 and the Saints had to play a wildcard playoff game in Seattle when they were 11-5 it just seemed wrong... We had to travel to Washington to play the Skins in a similar circumstance... I think every division winner should be guaranteed a playoff spot regardless of record, but they shouldn't be guaranteed a higher seed based on that alone... seeding should always be about wins and losses...

The problem with this theory is nobody said this about the NFC East when things were reversed. Back in the early 90s the Skins, Dallas, Philly and the Giants were all kick ass team. 11-5 wouldnt even get you a wild card spot back then.

It comes and goes. There is nothing permanent year to year in the NFL.
Teams routinely go from last place to first place and back again within short time frames.

Every single division has been won by a team with 9 wins or fewer in the last 25 years

Heck, Philly was 10-6 last year and did not even make the playoffs
This year this might get a home game at 7-9

The NFL is totally fine.
Everyone loves division rivals.
And if a team cannot beat a 7-9 team on the road, well they are not good enough to complain.

Yeah but they shouldn't be so rewarded .. guaranteeing a playoff spot is enough, they shouldn't get home-field over a team with a superior record... NFL needs to change that... It doesn't matter whether you should beat them or not, home field is big deal in the game of football...

Everyone division plays diffrent schedules, so it is actually fair.
That point only makes sense if everyone plays the same schedule.

In the NBA, everyone plays every single team. The schedules are almost identical within conferences.
Home field is decided by record in the NBA because of that fact. Divisions are irrelevent and should be irrelevent.

But, with 16 game schedule, you dont get to play everyone.
Suppose the NFC East played the AFC South instead of the AFC East this year, the records might look completely diffrent.

Unless, the NFL starts playing 24 game schedules, the system is fair to reward division winners a home game.

If seemingly shitty teams had never surprised us in the playoffs, I might agree, but that's just not the case. As awful as it may seem, we've had some great football courtesy of some teams with bad records in the playoffs. Besides, how often is a team that doesn't get in appear legitimately awesome?

What you say makes sense, you're rewarding the team that performed better during the season...but, if I'm following correctly, you would continue to allow an auto playoff berth, but weaken the benefit of winning the DIV by taking away the home game. idk, does reducing the value of the DIV crown hurt the league? It could imo.

If you want a truer reward playoff system...take the top 6 records from each conference.

NFL wanted parity. They got it. Here's to celebrating mediocrity.

It's always someone. There is always a division weaker than the others.

These things run in cycles it wasn't that long ago when the NFC and AFC West were the laughing stock of the NFL. I think the divisions are fine as is I do think Wildcard should be played at the division winner's field as some reward for winning their division. However, for the divisional round I think it should be reseeded so the stronger teams get to host.

win your division, simple as that. If you don't, you don't have room to cry about not getting a home playoff game, just be happy you even got in the playoffs.

Why? That would be such a rare case....a 5 seed having a stronger record than a 2 or 3 seed.
