Good news bad news. I need to get new STBs to get all the Center Ice channels. That's bad because I have a bunch of stuff recorded. The good news is they have a number of new HD channels. Yay.

Someone told me they are transmitting them differently and the old boxes couldn't decide the new HD signals.

Uhhh, no. Unless the UltraHD standard has started broadcasting, and considering that TVs to use it aren't even on sale yet...

If you are Comcast, the actual reason is the encryption on your previous DVR has been cracked and with some effort, you can pirate anything on it.

If you are Verizon, they just like to fuck with people.

I have Verizon. I don't mean a higher or new picture quality. Its all above my head but researching why I'd need a new box for the new channels I read Verizon is compressing the signals a new way to save bandwidth and the older HD STBs cannot decode it. The new channels are being broadcast or compressed using MPEG 4 and the older boxes cannot display it.

At least that's what I find on various forums. Its free, and I have had these boxers for 4 years or more so its no big deal. Except for all the shows I recorded that I am meaning to watch any day now.
