In an interview with CSN's Tarik El-Bashir, McCloughan explained that Gruden named Griffin the starter so there was a clear hierarchy who would get the first practice reps to begin the offseason. Gruden "felt obligated" to let Griffin know he would enter the offseason as starter, McCloughan said, so that when RG3 arrives to camp he can expect to take the first offensive snaps. Receiving those first snaps, however, will not automatically determine who starts come September.
"It's all about competition," McCloughan said. "It doesn't matter if he's getting first reps Day 1."
