Something tells me Sly will have a big year, contract year.

You know he will short of the bug ... We can pay him the same this year and still go long term in a signing bonus ... I will say getting that crazy year still sounds kind of good also ..Man on missions seem to do extraordinary things

I don't see much chance at Sly being a Bronco after this next season ..

If he has a good year - that plus the fact that he is part of this defense - he will have teams willing to overpay, or at least pay more than JE would prefer .. The Malik Syndrome

If he doesn't have a good year, there are already guys in place who will probably have shown by then that they can make him expendable ( Kilgo, Gotsis )

This is why I actually think the Broncos might work on getting something done this year. I think his contract would be easier than some of the other guys as they can do an extension say for 2 more years on top of this season at say $3-4 million a year and I think he would sign that. With our cap space next year that is easily something we can afford even with the big contracts that we have coming up. I have a hard time seeing him walk away from the negotiating table when that is what is being offered. That would still put him in the top-10 for his position in the league. Below a guy like Vince Wilfork who has been a top tier guy for most of his career by higher than guys like Chris Baker and Terrance Knighton.

Everyone realize Sly was drafted in a different scheme. He may be better suited for a 4-3. Here's to a great season but if he goes elsewhere next year good for him

We all realize that, we just think he might fit both. We will find out in year 2.

You are definitely right in we were playing a 4-3 defense at the time and he was more of a 3-tech. Although I will say what we drafted him for and how Del Rio used him were 2 very different things. In college his biggest asset was his first step quickness to get into the backfield. Of course Del Rio's scheme is more based on those middle guys clogging things up and taking on blockers for the linebackers to make plays. I will say that while I think Del Rio is a very good defensive mind in the NFL he is one that is very set on his scheme and making players have to fit what he wants to do instead of designing a scheme around the type of talent that he has.

So now as for the switch yeah that really hurt Sly's value. NT's just are not a highly regarded position. Even the top guys only make around $5 million a year so it makes 0 sense to pay a guy $6.75 million and make him the highest paid player at that position when he hasn't really proven that he is the best at that position. I do hope the Broncos re-sign him as I think he is a very nice rotational piece for us and has only gotten better every year while with the Broncos. Really to me the key to our defense more than anything else last year was our depth. We cannot start losing more depth and expect our defense to continue to perform like it did.
