I think they should try someone else in the slot though. Bently is beyond incompetent. Taking lumps is one thing, but constantly costing the team games has to take precedence.

Bentley is not a man corner at all. Slay needs to be #3 no doubt. He has made some mistakes but he looks alot more comfortable than BB.

Wai, wai, wait a minute bro. We're calling Slay a bust already after 2 games? I just wanna clarify for the masses.

I was going to post the same thing -- rookie DBs take their lumps. Some pick it up faster than others, but they have to learn what is and isn't allowed in the NFL and get acclimated to the speed of every WR they face.

Slay has shown he has ability, but he has made some mental mistakes which can be easily corrected.

I'm guessing the coaches have a really long leash for DBs, as Bentley continues to be put on the field. 1 pass defensed and 9 PI's in 6 games and still getting playing time -- I'm thinking Slay will be back playing again this week.

I like that they benched him for the mistakes -- it will only make him more conscious and aware. It isn't as if he is the only rookie DB getting benched. Milliner was benched by the Jets too.

Never used the word bust, but I'll happily lump him in with Delmas, Broyles, Leshoure, Pettigrew and Best in a growing line of 2nd rounders/second picks by Mayhew who don't look too good. Milliner? Never wanted him. Some fans here wanted him at 5.

No, but you used the phrase "incapable of handing him a decent 2nd rounder". That basically implies he's not worth much. I just think 2 games in is a bit silly to label any player, whether good or bad. Let's see how he progresses this year and make judgements after the season. I know it's usually a game-by-game judgement here(and with most fans), but there was a lot of blame to be shared last week. Calling him less than decent is a bit unfair at this point.

All I was getting at.

It's not unfair. That's what he is. Can he improve? Sure. But so far he's been less than decent. Just like all those others I named. All points to one guy, Mayhew.

Asomugha had 3 PD's in his first 2 years, no picks. What a waste aof a first round pick.

No idea what you were trying to prove here.

Very good players don't always start out great, bitching about Slay after 2 weeks is stupid.

So is jocking him after being benched in his first two games. That means one of two things. 1) the GM is a fucking idiot and the HC doesn't want to play the players he is given to him or 2) the HC is an idiot who think he can coach up bad college players.

I also presented a long list of players who are not very good, who were all drafted and coached by the same GM and HC. Ignore if you like, but I think it says a lot about what we can expect from Slay. For whatever reason, someone thought another 2nd rounder was good enough to start for the Lions, and they were wrong and benched him. It's not stupid to be concerned with that imo.

Slay was considered a first round talent who dropped to the second round due to the meniscus injury.

Most CB's develop a few years after they're drafted. To assume that either Slay is incompetent or competent after 2 games is ridiculous. He's a rookie who is going to make mistakes despite what anyone wants. For him to play off the bench, rather than start, behind a former pro-bowl player in Mathis doesn't make him a bust. Everyone knows Slay is the future for us- he just needs confidence and time with the position at the NFL level. For Schwartz to have him come off the bench is just a confidence thing. When you show up to work, you expect the new guys to struggle a bit and the proven guys to do their job and maybe help the younger ones out. That's exactly what's happening here with Mathis mentoring and teaching the young guns.

Slay and Bentley are young players both with less than a season of games under their belts. They're too inexperienced to be considered busts. Just give them time. Revisit them in 4 seasons and tell me how they look.
