What were your thoughts about Skylar coming in to relieve Clint on Saturday?

Dana said Crest had 'Jacked up' his throwing shoulder, and had not practiced last week. It was mentioned during the bye week that Skylar had performed well.

He ran a few zone read plays.

I was curious if he could add the running threat at the QB position; however, I didn't find any rushing info during a quick search. Our good friends at ESPN had him listed as a pocket passer coming out of High School. His size does't support the rushing QB model, but neither did Pat White. Could the read option be added to the play call list with Howard at the helm? As long as we do not start seeing a 2 QB system, I'm fine with it. It appears that Clint has worked hard during the off season and deserves to start and we should develop #2.

I think Dana is leaning to Red Shirt Crest at this point...it would make a ton of sense...

With our struggles in short yardage rushing I like the idea of Howard OR Crest coming in to add another runner for the defense to worry about. I want Trick in otherwise but we could use the short yardage conversions and TD's without the risk of putting the ball in the air. I mean, if we have the weapons, why not use them?

The offenses that have a mobile QB these days are the ones that are succeeding at a high level...yes we are ranked 10th in total defense but we have the least amount of TD's of anyone in the top 30....if you have a QB who is no real threat to run then the defense has one less person to worry about. I loved seeing the read option mixed in the play calling and hope to see it a lot more in the years to come.

How many snaps is that really...is it enough to dress a guy and burn a year of eligibility if he is your future?

I think the kid(s) getting the confidence that comes from the live game experience is worth it in this case. We are going to need one of these guys to be able to start next season and both may wind up playing if we have a close race at QB again next year like we did last year so even a few snaps could make a difference.

You are right, there is no substitute for actually playing in games, one of them is going to be our starter next year, and he needs to be ready right out of the gate.

So MAYBE playing 3 snaps ( 21 total) a game between now and the end of the year does that?

speaking from experience....yes sir it does. It is amazing how big a mouthpiece can grow in ones mouth and extend towards ones throat when one is trotting out on that field for his first live game experience . Evan that small sample size can help with the mental preparation for the future, not to mention getting used to the speed of the game at this level.

Compare those snaps to the full extra year we get from redshirting. Also, if he did get those snaps and emerge as the sure fire starter next year, our two QB recruits may look elsewhere where they have a shot at playing time.

I don't know...I may feel differently if I felt this program was rock solid in its depth...keep in mind this is the first year they have a full roster in 5 years....I think in this case red shirting as many freshman as we can right now and ones with a high ceiling like Crest will only enhance the sustainability of building a consistent winner going forward..

I also look at the benefit to the athlete...he is given the opportunity to focus on studies and acclimate to college life a little easier..

In an ideal situation I agree 100%, bring the kid along slowly and let him get the college life thing down first but in this day and age that's not always the norm. High profile HS kids like Crest (for example) want a promise that they will play or even start and play from day 1 ( I know how ridiculous that is but that's a big sell for a lot of todays kids) and if they don't get that then they start sniffing around and listening to what other programs might have to offer. Combine that with us needing a QB next season (if not later this year pending how the next few games go) and how second year QB's that have seen time have looked in Dana's system and it makes a lot of sense to get him in there.

I'm not so sure about that...I think in some average programs getting to start right away is important...but for kids like Crest who may have the skills to get a look at the next level thats all they want to hear..that the HC by the time they leave will be a strong consideration for the draft...
