It's a good trade for the Skins if the Bucs weren't about to release him if they couldn't trade him...:noidea:

That's an interesting point. As the contract details have not been released by the skins yet, all the details are still not in.

The flip side to this is the possibility that there'd be a bidding war for his services if he was cut. The advantage of trading for him is that we inherit no guaranteed money, we give up a sixth rounder, and get another pick. The only potential downside here is that he's owed $8M next year and $7.5M the year after that.

Could we have picked him up without giving up a draft pick and signing him to a lesser dollar deal? Perhaps. But this where we give the benefit of the doubt to McCloughan, something which he has deservedly earned during his short tenure here.

Speculation aside about what we could've done had he been cut, this was, overall, a pretty darn good trade.

Another 'positive': he and Culliver used to play together and should be able to sync up better than two strangers.
I noticed that too. Good point!

It's unlikely he will see that $8m next year and the $7.5 m the following year is a pipe dream. None of the next two years are guaranteed. However, if he comes in here and performs, $8m for a stud vet FS is a fairly good deal. It's a no lose proposition for us (unless, of course, he gets injured this year and can't play).

It would be 4 mill if the Buccs picked up the 3.5 they reportedly were going to.

It is interesting that no contract details have yet been released by the Skins

Hoping this deal is even Better than what was reported :)

Edit...I see you are talking next year, if we kept him...

Thought you were talking supposed price this year.

Yes, his cap hit this year is $8M, $4M of which is being picked up by the Bucs, and another $4M which consists of $3.5M base salary and $500K as a workout bonus.

Youtube video of Goldson and Culliver teaming up to body slam Doug Baldwin. Culliver got flagged for a PF on the play, but this is a good example of 'teamwork' between the two.

Well let's hope they avoid personal penalties. Cullivers hit there looked late to me.

What? You mean you don't miss Brandon Merriweather's parade of late hits and unnecessary roughness penalties?
I know it will come as an enormous surprise...but no...

well , what we got is a 31 yr old stopgap FS who rated just above ryan clark for last at his position

on the surface that sucks and would deserve condemnation however there is more to the story

lets put on our CSI hats for just a moment and think this out a bit

SM went to a divison 3 school this week to scout an obscure FS who stand 6-2 and run a 4.42 40 . his name is devante bausby and has had a little buzz on twitter

now lets say that he likes this kid but feels he will need a season or 2 of seasoning and by god he has a great influence is dashon to school young devante . hmmmm in my greatest CSI story yet we could be seeing the evil genius perculating even further

of course you can insert any known draftable safety as well but the story isnt as CSI ish

add in Tanard Jackson somehow and the plot thickens

LOL! Tanard jackson...... We still own the rights to him, I think. He is a perfect example of why you don't use a high draft pick or a huge contract on a multiple repeat offender.

Felt same RT @BurgundyBlog: Good points. I’d say so MT @Rich_TandlerCSN: Should WSH have been more patient w Goldson? Should the Redskins have been more patient in getting Goldson? | Rich Tandler's Real Redskins

Can't argue with anything in this article, though I'd say that if GMSM and Joe Barry think that Goldson was somebody they really wanted, who can help here, then it's a good deal.

I assume they can / will restructure somebody's contract and sign them long term if they need more cap room. Kerrigan, maybe?

Only reason I can think of that they didn't wait til Goldson was cut is they didn't want any other team to have the opportunity to pick him up since the FS available were so slim. This way they go into the draft with that position more nailed down without necessitating a CB conversion.
