Thats always the rub. We want to improve and want instant gratification at a bargain price from guys that are younger. The reality is, the teams that become good and stable contenders do it gradually. They do end up holding onto a guy like Moss until such time as they already have his replacement in the fold in most cases. They end up paying to hold onto their own guys even when they are not All Pro because in the long run its better for the team than paying some one elses free agents and hoping THEY will perform better. People forget, the patriots basically sucked for Billichecks first 4 years. And Pats fans screamed that he held onto Marginal talent and in some cases guys that clearly wouldnt start any place else. But he slowly built his roster, kept his marginal young guys until they became exceptional slightly less young guys, then the Patriots became a dynasty for a while there.

I don't disagree with either of you,( Shark/ J__Y19) my objection to resigning Moss at this point, had almost everything to do with FA and little to do with needing to resign him. What was the hurry?? Why not wait for players to be released, assess their potential signings against the cap, and how their contribution to the team would be factored in vs. that of Moss. Maybe, this is, as someone suggested....an honorarium to Moss.

Shark, i agree. However, Billicheck is good at developing talent, something we haven't done since Gibbs first tenure. Shanahan was terrible at it. I can't think of one player he drafted that developed into a good producer. Part of developing talent is coaching. Part is drafting players that have upside. And the final part is letting them play and learn. Think about all the players we have drafted in the last 10 years. How many really developed into regular contributors. I don't count the 1st round picks, they came into the league producing, but even they haven't developed further. The closest we come would be Riley and maybe Hank was getting there.

j_y... I think part of the development thing is ipatients from the owner and to a degree the fan base that supports his inpatients. Ad even now we are seeing signs of it. Most fan bases would be thrilled to have a guy they picked in the 4th round develop into a starter. Yet all we hear about riley is, well if he wont play for cheap.. fuck em we can get his production from some one else for less than what he is reported to want. And some have even said the same about Rak. It has got to start someplace. Im hoping this year is finally it, where we take guys like Riley, Rak and even to a degree guys we have had stashd away like Minnifield and start developing them instead of going after the hot name of the year and throwing money at them to sell jerseys.

And Im fine with the Moss resigning. Because I honestly think he would out perform any one we could grab in the 6th round. And I still expect we will bring in a FA WR to be the starter. I do think its a measure of respect to start talking to him now. And its the kinds of moves the redskins used to make all the time, when we were consistently good. Sty... I know you remember those days. :D
